The Story of a Google Email

E-mail Print PDF

The usually secretive Google has an interesting and little known story to tell-- "The Story of Send," a cute cartoon revealing how its data centers process and manage Gmail messages.

GmailThe story starts off at New York, where an email travels all the way from a PC in New York City to a smartphone in San Francisco. The email meets a variety of interesting characters (including the yeti and a vampire) before reaching that most mysterious of realms... a Google data center.

Admittedly the animation is more than a little simplistic, portraying Google as very, very environmentally friendly-- it claims 1 year of average Gmail use consumes less energy than drinking a bottle of wine, putting a message in the bottle and throwing it in the ocean. Slightly fuzzy statement, that.

It also reveals Google's security methods, recycling efforts, exotic cooling methods and use of clean energy. The cartoons also capture the look of a Google site, down to the employees in shorts going around rows of servers servers on little scooters. No details on the actual hardware within those servers, though...
