We all know how keeping data centres cool with the most economical means possible is serious business-- Google is cooling servers at its Taiwan facility using thermal energy storage, a first for the company.
Thermal energy storage involves cooling water or liquid coolant at night (when temperatures are low and energy cheaper) before storing it in insulated tanks. The cold water cools keeps servers cool during the day instead of regular AC or cooling systems.
Focus Taiwan reports the facility (one of three in Asia) is also custom-built to be as environmentally friendly and energy efficient as possible. The company says the facility uses 50% less energy than typical facilities-- an attractive point in a country where electricity may soon get more expensive.
Google uses a variety of innovative data centre cooling methods-- the Finland Google facility is kept cool with freezing waters from the Baltic, while recycled sewage water cools a data centre in W. Georgia. Data centre operators, take note.
