EMEA PC shipments grow by 9.1% Y-o-Y in Q2 2012 according to the International Data Corporation (IDC), beating earlier forecasts from the analyst of 5.6% growth.
Growth in W. Europe is the slowest, reaching a "moderate" 4.1% Y-o-Y as both consumer and enterprise demand remain soft in many countries. CEE outpaces IDC expectations with 25.1% Y-o-Y growth thanks to aggressive vendor push in the region, while MEA maintains a disappointing trend with modest 4.8% Y-o-Y growth.
The CEMA region records 15.2% Y-o-Y shipment growth in Q2 2012, reaching volume of 12 million units.
"The market benefits from a favorable Y-o-Y comparison versus Q2 2011... when sell-in was affected by the inventory buildup and led to a contraction of -8.4%, but was further boosted in Q2 2012 by an aggressive push from some vendors in the channel and a significant portion of sea-shipped products in transit for Q3," IDC says.
Consumers within EMEA still prefer to either buy tablets or phones (rather than ultrabooks and other ultra-slim PCs) or adopt a "wait and see" attitude. However the Windows 8 launch and a vendor-led push on ultra-slim models should revive consumer traction by the back-to-school and holiday seasons.
HP remains top EMEA vendor despite softer performance, with 19.2% market share and a -4.5% Y-o-Y decline due to slow consumer demand in W. Europe. Acer follows with 32.7% Y-o-Y growth following the Q2 2011 declines of -37.8%.
Asus also records a strong Q2, beating Dell with 10.9% market share and 39.2% Y-o-Y growth. Dell now is at 4th place after suffering from tough competition in notebook space.
Lenovo is the vendor with most growth in EMEA-- 63.3% Y-o-Y, with continued expansion in W. European and CEE consumer space.
