The iPad-Powered Telepresence Robot

Telepresence robots are nothing new-- but the Double from Double robots is the first we've seen to combine a self-balancing base with a pair of iPads.

DoubleThe Double unit looks a bit like a Segway, since it basically is a stick on a wheeled cylinders. A stand on top of the "stick" holds a single iPad serving as both screen and camera. A second iPad acts as a remote controller and conferencing unit.

An app handles movement and conferencing, with controls for both robot movement (driving, height, parking with kickstand) and video. Handling video calls is iOS-to-iOS service OpenTok.

With its sleek design and relatively low pricing ($1999 not including iPads), the Double looks like an interesting conferencing option for your customers. Double Robotics already sold its first Double production run, and should start shipping new orders from Q1 2013.
