Dolby Sues RIM

Dolby RIMDolby Laboratories files patent-infringement lawsuits in Germany and the US against Research in Motion, claiming "many RIM products" infringe patents covering digital audio compression technologies. 

Dolby says Dolby International (its wholly owned subsidiary) will seek both financial damages and an injunction against sales of RIM devices allegdly using its technology. 

The "many RIM products" include Blackberry handsets as well as the Playbook tablet. 

Dolby continues "all other major smartphone makers" license the same technologies (part of an international standard) subject of the litigation. Licensing fees alone cover an impressive 86% of Dolby's revenue in Q2 2011 (a total of $214.6m from nearly $250m).
