VMware announces the Photon Platform has built-in Kubernetes support at VMworld 2016 Europe, together with the addition of networking and storage services powereed by VMware NSX and Virtual SAN.

VMworldThe result, the company says, turns Photon Platform into an end-to-end enterprise cloud-native infrastructure for running modern, containerised application in production, all with VMware support.

"VMware Photon Platform takes a major step forward by empowering IT teams to deliver, secure and operate the modern services that development teams require with the infrastructure automation demanded by today's leading enterprise organizations," the company adds. "Based on the industry-leading hypervisor, network virtualisation and hyper-converged storage solutions, VMware Photon Platform offers customers unprecedented business speed and agility to deliver innovative software solutions to market quicker."

As VMware puts it, Photon Platform delivers Kubernetes-as-a-Service in a multi-tenant fashion for workload isolation and security. Customers can scale Kubernetes clusters from single node clusters to hundreds of nodes with in "minutes" with no down time, while further capabilities include automatic healing from failures and end-to-end support with a commercially-supported Kubernetes distribution.

Also mentioned is the addition of NSX-based networking services, with initial support for switching and routing services, and the introduction of block storage services through Virtual SAN. The storage handles containerised and cloud-native applications, and provides deduplication, stretched clusters and erasure coding on top of a hyper-converged infrastructure model.

The Photon Platform will be available from Q4 2016.
