VMware Takes on Mobile Networks

VMware presents a take on Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) at Mobile World Congress 2015 with VMware vCloud for NFV-- an integrated NFV platform combining VMware solutions with OpenStack support.

VMwareAccording to the company the platform supports over 40 different virtual network functions (VNFs) from more than 30 vendors, all running on the same unified platform on the cloud. As such it allows communication service providers (CSPs) to deploy NFV solutions in a faster and more cost effective manner.

VMware solutions integrated in vCloud for NFV include vSphere, NSX, Virtual SAN and Realize Operations. It is OpenStack-compatible via VMware integrated OpenStack.

"We are seeing OpenStack momentum continue to grow across the CSP market as our customers seek to achieve greater agility, and to leverage Open APIs to support true multi-vendor NFV," VMware says. "OpenStack also supports the NFV objective of dramatically reducing infrastructure costs to address continued margin erosion. CSPs need an OpenStack distribution that is optimized for a mature NVFI platform that helps them get started today and carries them through tomorrow."

The vCloud for NFV platform is available now, with VMware Integrated OpenStack to launch on the platform sometime on Q1 2015.
