Cisco announces the $2.35 billion acquisition of Duo Security, a Michigan-based provider of unified access security and multi-factor authentication delivered through the cloud.

Cisco DuoFounded in 2010 by Dug Song and Jonathan Oberheie, Duo Security sells solutions for the verification of user identity and device health before granting access to applications. As such, the integration of Cisco network, device and cloud security platforms with Duo Security zero-trust authentication and access products should allow customers to easily and securely connect to any application on any networked device.

"In today's multicloud world, the modern workforce is connecting to critical business applications both on- and off-premise," Cisco says. "IT teams are responsible for protecting hundreds of different perimeters that span anywhere a user makes an access decision. Duo's zero-trust authentication and access products integrated with our network, device and cloud security platforms will enable our customers to address the complexity and challenges that stem from multi-and hybrid-cloud environments."

Post-acquisition Duo Security becomes part of the Cisco Networking and Security business under the leadership of Song, who reports to EVP and GM David Goeckler. The deal is set to close on fiscal Q1 2019.
