Ethernet Switch Market's Surprising Decline

IDC reports the WW ethernet switch market sees a -9.1% Y-o-Y decline in Q1 2011 (with toals reaching $5Bn), showing a stop to the growth following 2010's strong recovery. 

ethernet switchThe analyst says some switch market segments are still going strong-- the 10GbE switch segment's revenues grow by 15.9% Y-o-Y through datacenter adoption and campus core deployments.

Cisco leads the ethernet switch market (Layer 2/3) with Q1 2011 market share totalling 64.15%-- a slight decline for Q4 2010's 65.7%. 

Demand for GbE is down by -12.8% Y-o-Y, despite an 11.8% increase in port shipments, IDC says. GbE currently has 60.9% of the overall Layer 2/3 switching market, while Fast Ethernet's share totals 11.4% (clear proof of its decline, even if it remains an attractive choice for smaller businesses). 

The WW router market fares better in Q1 2011. with 6.9% Y-o-Y growth-- but its enterprise segment sees Y-o-Y declines of -16.6%, while the server provider segment declines by -12.6% Q-o-Q.
