Google Shows Off POWER8 Motherboard

Google MotherboardThe OpenPOWER Foundation starts showing results beyond IBM-developed hardware-- Google reveals a POWER8 server motherboard at the Impact 2014 conference, Las Vegas.

Clad in a fetching shade of red, the motherboard finds use in a server porting the Google software stack to POWER hardware. According to Google senior director Gordon MacKean the OpenPOWER server also allows for detailed performance measurements and continuous optimisation.

The revelation of such hardware efforts might not look like much, but they do spell bad news for Intel-- after all, Google is one of the biggest Intel server chip customers, and if it starts preferring Big Blue hardware other companies might follow suit.
