Whiptail aims for the virtual desktop market with its XLR8r, a SSD-based SAN which the company calls VDI's next evolutionary step.

xlr8rThe XLR8r is a purpose-built 2U appliance designed to optimise virtual desktop deployment, with 1 XLR8r able to handle up to 6000 users and 250000 IOPS (as much as x8 fully loaded HDD racks).

It has power consumption of less than 200W, with 0.1ms latency and capacities of up to 12TB. Gigabit Ethernet (x2) interfaces come as standard, with optional quad or dual 10 GB/s ethernet, 1 Gb/s ethernet, 40 Gb/s infiniband or 4/8 Gb/s fibrechannel.

The system is also plug and play-- users only need to assign it a network protocol and LUNs for it to be ready to work.

Whiptail claims the XLR8r can bring savings in both power consumption and space by as much as 90%, alongside savings in actual costs.
