Cohesity Takes on Data Silos With Helios

Hyperconverged secondary storage specialist Cohesity launches Helios-- software-as-a-service (SaaS) tool allowing customers to manage secondary data and applications globally via single dashboard.

Cohesity Secondary data is the data collected by someone other than the user. For instance, the social sciences use secondary data in the shape of censuses, information collected by government departments, organisational records and data originally collected for other research purposes.

The Cohesity DataPlatform spans across on-premises datacentres and public and private clouds. Helios provides a global view of all such deployments in a single control screen, and allows admins to roll out policies and upgrades across an entire Cohesity multi-cluster environment with a single click. In addition, Helios uses machine learning to examine infrastructure use and suggest appropriate adjustments, and can make peer comparisons by using anonymised metadata from other Cohesity customers.

Other features include proactive health checks (also based on metadata collected by Cohesity), automated failure correction in case of non-critical system resources, and a "crystal ball" allowing admins to test the impact of future changes before rollout. One can even go "what-if" and evaluate alternative approaches thanks to machine learning.

A Cohesity Analytics Workbench (AWB) allows provides customers with insights into previously untapped data through 3 applications-- Pattern Finder (detects patterns in secondary data to ensure compliance), Password Detection (searches across global data sets to uncover passwords failing to meet best practices) and Video Compression (reduces the size of large media files).
