Seagate announces what it claims is "world's fastest hard drive for mission critical applications"-- the 6th generation Enterprise Performance 15K HDDs, with sustained transfer rates reaching up to 315MB/s.

Seagate 15K The 2.5-inch HDDs promise to improve TCO for faster time-to-data for transaction-based applications, with 2ms latency and sustained transfer rate (outer to inner) of 315 to 215MB/s. The interface fo choice is the 12GB/s SAS, while MTBF clocks at 2 million hours and a 256MB multisegmented DRAM cache is included.

Further features include TurboBoost technology (with 16GB NAND buffer) for optimum response times and Advanced Write Caching (8MB NVRAM cache) for mission-critical storage workload efficiency. Average operating power consumption varies according to model, but stands at around 4.7-5.8W.

The company says the 6th generation 15K HDDs are the last of their kind-- after all, the advancement of SSD technology makes for improved performance, lower power consumption and greater density.

The 15K HDDs are available from Q3 2016 in 300, 600 and 900GB capacities.
