Change the Conversation, Please

Tiffany Bova, VP of IT Sales & Channel Strategies at Gartner, made a presentation at COMDEXvirtual. Apparently the information was so valuable that Gartner didn’t want to leave it up on the site like other speakers.

Here we’ve interpreted the essence of her speech, but if you get a chance to hear Tiffany’s own version, take it.

While “Change the Conversations” is a phrase used by Gartner in one sense, this theme actually applies well to three cases within Gartner’s scenarios for the future of solution providers...

The Year of the Cloud, 2010

As a summary of 2010, we should try to pull together what we have learned about cloud this year.

Mark Cuban: Kick Your Own

Make no mistake: Mark Cuban is The Reseller Hero. In fact, he is one of the most successful IT resellers of all time.

From the outside, he doesn’t look like us anymore. He’s the playboy owner of an American basketball team. OK, he’s now married and no longer a playboy but instead he gets to join in on Dancing with the Stars.

As well as owning the NBA basketball team (Dallas Mavericks), he started the first high-definition satellite television network (HDNet). Cuban is co-owner of 2929 Entertainment, which provides vertically integrated Read more...

JPEG file format is traditionally used for images on the web, but Google finds it too slow. 65% of bytes on the Web are from images and WebP could cut 40% from image file sizes.

The most common image formats on the web today work on technology from more than a decade ago. Engineers at Google looked for a way to further compress images like JPEG to make them load faster, yet preserve quality and resolution.

You can bet Google is looking at video compression, too.

Corbisgate for Bill Gates?

While Steve Jobs battles "Antennagate," Bill Gates is riding under the radar with Corbisgate.

A 6-person company near Seattle sued stock photo company Corbis (Bill Gates is sole owner) and won a $20 million judgment. Naturally Corbis is appealing the decision.

The Superior Court jury decided Corbis did enter business with Infoflows and then developed the company's ideas into a service for identifying objects in its digital photo collection. The court called Corbis's behaviour "fraudulent."

If you've been in the computer business for a Read more...
