RIP, Lexmark Inkjets

In a perhaps unsurprising move, Lexmark kills its inkjet printer business as part of "restructuring action," closing off a Philippines inkjet supply manufacturing facility and eliminating all global injket development efforts.

The cost cutting measure (one Lexmark hopes will bring annual savings of up to $95 million) also eliminates 1700 jobs worldwide. The company already cut 625 jobs earlier.

The Lexmark inkjet printer business was not a very healthy one-- H2 2012 inkjet revenues for the company are down by -66% Y-o-Y.

Deutsche Bank Analyst:

A research note from Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore leaves very little to the imagination-- the title says "Dead-tree format is dying," and the inside shows the inevitable decline of all printer vendors over the last few years.

The research combines supplies and hardware revenues from major printer vendors (including Canon, Epson, HP, Xerox and Lexmark) over the last 10 quarters, showing dramatic declines in both unit shipments and revenues.

Results for Q2 2012 are "particularly weak as Canon, Epson, Lexmark and Xerox all missed expectations," Read more...

Samsung Launches in Printers

Sharpened by competition against Apple, Samsung no longer fears the competition-- declaring war on the dominance HP and Xerox currently hold over business printers at a recent Milan launch event.

The UI allows users to customise up to 40 short-cuts, with actions customers can summon through Read more...

How Many Pages Does EMEA Print Daily?

According to IDC, the answer to the above question is 3 billion-- enough pages to either reach the moon and back (if laid one of after another) or cover the area of 18 football pitches... every minute!

In other words EMEA printing mirrors WW trends, which IDC says reached 3.1 trillion in 2010. Page volume is slightly down in W Europe (by -1% Y-o-Y), but is up in CEMA by over 14% Y-o-Y, with MFPs leading in page share (and thus, usage).

IDC says colour laser devices are up in both W Europe and CEMA, with page volume growing by around 16% Y-o-Y in Read more...
