Google Buys Quickoffice

Google acquires Quickoffice for an undisclosed sum in a clear move to bridge Google Apps and mobile with Quickoffice's mobile office productivity software.

Quickoffice makes office software for iDevices and Androids (in both mobile and tablet flavours), complete with Microsoft Office document editing, cloud compatibility and single-screen file management. 

The purchase could also be an offensive against Microsoft, whose Windows 8 is both tablet friendly (with an ARM-compatible version) and obviously MS Office-ready.

Dell Buys Even More Software

Dell is making more and more software purchases-- it just acquired software modernisation services providers Make Technologies and Clerity Solutions. 

Both purchases offer similar services, and will provide Dell with "the capabilities to help customers with all their modernization needs—from re-hosting and re-platforming to code re-engineering."

Make counts giants in its customer base, including IBM and Oracle. It employs around 100 people, who will now move to the Dell Services team... as will Clerity's 70 employees.

Gartner expects W. European SaaS revenues to reach over $3.2 billion in 2012 (up from $2.7bn in 2011) as EMEA adoption currently runs "at two speeds."

W. Europe (as the most developed EMEA market) is adopting SaaS at the most rapid pace as European SaaS vendor numbers grow and N. American vendors continue pushing into the region. Meanwhile E. Europe and MEA represent medium to long term opportunities, as vendors need to overcome ongoing infrastrucuture challenges. The analyst also saysnetwork instability is a general EMEA issue.

IDC: Moderate 2012 Growth for European Software

As social, big data and the consumerisation of IT continue leaving their footprint on the industry, IDC estimates European software will experience "moderate" 3.1% Y-o-Y growth during 2012.

The analyst says CRM will lead in enterprise software, as updates on salesforce automation and customer service applications start featuring social capabilities including discussion forums, activity streams, follow/subscribe options and external feeds.

Microsoft says the 2012 version of the System Center management suite will be a hybrid cloud system manager-- handling not only Windows Server in data centres, but also workloads in on-premises clouds and Window Azure public clouds.
