Microsoft Previews Touchable Office

Microsoft reveals the Office 2013 customer preview-- now with a consistent touch-based interface shared across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the other familiar Office modules.

A touch mode brings up special navigation icons on screen as it "flattens" the UI. Users can pinch to zoom into images, tables and charts, while a "Read Mode" makes on-screen text easier to read and activates swipe-based Read more...

Not that Win32 will go away too soon, mind. A combination of the WinRT programming model, a new UI and legacy WinNT support should allow users to continue running Win32 programs alongside WinRT apps for at least the next 10 years.

Gartner says "Windows 8 is the start of Microsoft's effort to respond to market demands and competitors, as it provides a common interface and programming API set from phones to servers. It is also the beginning of the end of Win32 applications on the desktop." While Microsoft will continue supporting Win32, it also encourages developers to start writing WinRT applications.

Gartner:

Gartner reports WW 2012 enterprise software spending will total $120.4 billion-- a 4.5% Y-o-Y increase with "only limited signs of improvement in the near term."

"The full impact of economic uncertainty on enterprise software markets may not be readily assessable until end H1 2012," Gartner continues.

The analyst says 2012 software spending will focus on industry-specific applications, upgrades to mission-critical software, integration and securing of established systems and infrastructure, and the replacement (or extension) of existing applications w Read more...
