OEMs Get Windows 8.1

Microsoft marks the next step towards the release of Windows 8.1 (formerly known as Blue) and passes the update (both Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 versions) to its hardware partners.

The update rolls out from 18 October 2013 as well devices carrying the latest version of the OS such as tablets, lightweight notebooks, 2-in-1 devices and regular PCs.

“In many ways, this marks a new day at Microsoft, reflecting a number of rapid release firsts," a company statement says. "Thanks, in part, to customer feedback and an unparalleled level of collaboration across product teams, Windows 8.1 is a significant update. We have delivered in a very short time an update to the OS that will bring an even greater unified experience for our customers."

One HP Product for Record Management

HP will no longer sell multiple records management products-- the company goes for further software consolidation and rolls HP TRIM, Autonomy Records Manager and Autonomy Meridio into a single application.

Dubbed Records Manager 8, the application is built on the TRIM codebase if with Records Manger and Meridio capabilities.

"Our customers understood it was not a good decision to continue to maintain three different records management products in the market," HP global director of information governance software says. "The goal of HP was to combine the best of those products into a [single] platform, and make it easier to use and more efficient."

Among the Autonomy and Meridio functionality found in Records Manager are SharePoint compatibility and data warehouse capabilities, all within a revamped create and search interface.  Read more...

Myrrix founder Sean Owen joins Cloudera as Director of Data Science (where he will probably work on tool development), and the new owners get to own at least some Myrrix IP together with its customer base.

"We’re going to make “Big Learning” on Hadoop easy and accessible" Owen says in his acquisition announcement.

Gartner: The Cloud Office Opportunity

Contrary to expectations most organisations have not moved their office software to the cloud-- Gartner estimates just 8% of overall WW (excluding China and India) enterprise office system customers are already up in the cloud.

Thus global enterprise cloud office users total around 50 million.

However the analyst predicts cloud office systems will see a shift on H2 2015, before penetration reaches 33% by 2017.

"Despite the hype surrounding migration to the cloud, big differences in movement rates continue, depending on organisation size, industry, geography and specific requirements," Gartner says. "While 8% of business people were using cloud office systems at the start of 2013, we estimate this number will grow to 695m users by 2022, to represent 60%." Read more...
