Enterprise Warms Up to Apple

Apple device management solution developer Jamf Software says enterprise Apple adoption is on the up-- and according to a Dimensional Research survey of 300 US-based IT professionals the industry lacks tools to handle the iDevice influx.

The survey shows internal IT team support of iPhones and iPads at 91% and 89% respectively, while 78% of participants cite user preference as a main reason for supporting Apple.

Mac PC support stands at 60%.

Meanwhile 98% anticipate enterprise Apple device adoption to grow by "at least" 25% over the next 3 years, and such influx means more work for IT as according to 91% of surveyed professionals Apple device and enablement requires IT involvement.

As to cope for such growth, 40% will get additional IT budget and 20% will hire more staff-- although a good number (23%) of companies lack a solid plan to deal with the iDevice influx, and a far larger percentage (80%) lacks confidence in their management software of choice, mainly due to the use of Windows-based solutions to manage Apple devices.

Wearable Enterprise Apps via Salesforce

Salesforce turns its attentions to wearable electronics and launches Salesforce Wear, an open source platform for developers wanting to the likes of Google Glass from consumer toys into enterprise tools.

The Wear platform counts Samsung, Philips and ARM as partners, and currently supports the Google Glass headset, the Samsung Gear 2 and Pebble smartwatches, the MYO gesture control armband, the Bionym Nymi (a heart beat-based authentication wristband) and devices running on the upcoming Android Wear.

To help developers wanting to take on the device category Salesforce provides what it calls the "Salesforce Wear Developer Pack"-- a collection of open source reference apps acting as an example of how Salesforce builds apps for such devices. In turn such apps connect to the Salesforce1 platform.

"Wearables are the next phase of the mobile revolution," Salesforce says before talking of the "massive opportunity these devices offer to connect with customers in new ways."

WWDC 2014: All About the OS Updates

The Apple Worldwide Developers' Conference (WWDC) has never been a hardware show, but rarely has it been so focused on operating system updates-- both OS X and iOS are getting new versions packed with tweaks and features later this year.

As these things tend to do we also got the latest Apple user numbers, from the Mac installed base (80 million) and the percentage currently using Mavericks (51%) to big iOS numbers (2013 saw 135m customers buying a first iDevice) and overall satisfaction totals (97%).

Opening proceeds before the traditional keynote was "Apps We Can't Live Without," a video celebrating the users' favourite apps and the developers behind them. After all, WWDC is a developers' event-- and registered Apple developer numbers now total 9 million, a 47% increase in 12 months.

Nearly 30% OS Share for Win XP

Microsoft might be ending support for Windows XP in just about a month, but the venerable OS is not going anywhere any time soon-- according to Net Market Share 29.5% of PCs continue running on XP.

Windows XP supports ends on 8 April 2014, meaning users will no longer get system updates or patches. Microsoft is understandably eager to get such users to move to newer Windows versions (preferably 8/8.1), and even offers a free tool for hopefully smooth migration.

However Windows 8 support remains low-- while 47.3% of PCs run on Windows 7, just 6.4% run Windows 8, with an additional 4.3% for Windows 8.1. Vista is also still around, with 3.1% share.

The rest of the pie is divided between Mac OS X (3.5%), Linux (1.5%) and "other" (4.4%).
