Windows 10 Arrives on Qualcomm Chips

Microsoft takes another stab at putting Windows on ARM-based chipsets-- a collaboration with Qualcomm brings about a full version of Windows 10 running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor.

Machines running on such Snapdragon CPUs can support x86 Win 32 and universal Windows apps, including Adobe Photoshop, Windows 10 games and, of course, the likes of Office. A demo of the Windows 10 Enterprise Edition emulation running on the ARM-based Qualcomm CPU appears to be as smooth as expected, and can lead to what the two companies insist on calling "cellular PCs."

“We are excited to bring Windows 10 to the ARM ecosystem with Qualcomm Technologies,” Microsoft Windows and Devices Group VP Terry Myerson says. “We continue to look for ways to empower our customers to create wherever they are. Bringing Windows 10 to life with a range of thin, light, power-efficient and always-connected devices, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform, is the next step in delivering the innovations our customers love-- touch, pen, Windows Hello, and more-- anytime, anywhere.”

IGEL intros Next-Gen Universal Desktop Converter

IGEL Technology announces Universal Desktop Converter 3 (UDC3) featuring the IGEL Linux 10 OS-- a means for customers of all sizes to convert PCs, laptops and thin clients into Linux 10-based thin clients.

The software enables organisations to securely administer all endpoint devices from a centralised management console, and eliminates the need to acquire new hardware to support virtualised infrastructures. Linux 10 supports the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI), extending UDC3 target platforms to the latest end-user devices, with enhanced 64-bit OS compatibility allowing the addressing of over 4GB of RAM in next-gen devices.

Linux 10 allows hardware-accelerated multimedia content and protocol decoding in devices with supported chipsets, powering "spectacular" performance when using popular communications protocols such as Citrix HDX, VMware Blast and Microsoft RDX. Security is also catered for through regular firmware updates, endpoint tools such as DriveLock and support for two-factor authentication via integrated or external smart card readers or security tokens.

The top five countries using Workplace are India, the US, Norway, the UK and France.

Companies like CSC, Deloitte Digital, TBWA, SADA Systems, Revevol and others have jumped at the chance to be partners… Read more...

Microsoft Bundles Windows, Office, MDM in Secure Productive Enterprise

Microsoft announces Secure Productive Enterprise (SPE)-- a licensing option covering OS, productivity apps and mobile device management by bundling Windows 10 Enterprise, Office 365, and Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS).

Also included is a selection of collaboration and analytics products, as well as the newly announced Windows Defender Application Guard and enhanced Advanced Threat Protection in order to cover the "secure" part of the SPE name. Windows Defender Application Guard uses Hyper-V virtualisation to sandbox web applications, allowing users to visit and use untrusted sites without the risk of malware infections, and stop targeted spear-phisihing attacks.

It creates a Windows instance in hardware, with a separate kernel and the bare minimum of Windows Platform Services required to run Edge. As a result exploitable resources (such as memory and local storage) are blocked, as is access to credentials. Any malware deposited finds nothing to glean or hook to, and once the browser session it is discarded together with the temporary instance.
