Samsung Takes on BYOD

Samsung addresses the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2013 with Knox-- a container solution separating work and personal smartphone use.

Part of the Samsung for Enterprise (SAFE) program, Knox incorporates Security Enhanced (SE) Android from the NSA and integrity management implemented in both hardware and Android framework.

The idea is not new (VMware offers a similar product, Horizon Mobile), but Knox appears to be the easier implementation. Users access the Knox environment via home screen icon, which comes Read more...

Canonical Unveils Ubuntu for Tablets

We already know Ubuntu Linux is set to arrive on mobile devices-- now Canonical reveals how the upcoming version of the OS will take on the tablet experience.

Able to run the same applications as the desktop version, tablet Ubuntu promises the best of both PC and mobile worlds with "side stage" multitasking allowing users to run phone and tablet apps side-by-side (for example a video playing on one side, a Twitter app on the other) on a single display.

Once connected to a keyboard and mouse Ubuntu tablets also provide a desktop experience complete with remote Windows access via VMware, Wyse, Microsoft and Citrix virtual desktop tools.

"Multi-tasking productivity meets elegance and rigorous security in our tablet experience," Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth says. "Our family of interfaces now scales across all screens, so your phone can provide tablet, PC and TV experiences when you dock it. That's unique to Ubuntu and it's the future of personal computing." RIM Launches BlackBerries, Changes Name

"BlackBerry" is now more than just a smartphone name-- on the BlackBerry 10 launch Research in Motion renames itself to BlackBerry in a move to consolidate the company brand.

"As we launch BlackBerry 10 around the world, now is the right time to adopt the iconic BlackBerry name" CEO Thorsten Heins says.

Now the hopes of a renamed RIM (sorry, BlackBerry) lie in not one, but two smartphones running on the latest BlackBerry OS version-- the Z10 and the Q10.

The Z10 is the BlackBerry take on the iPhone concept, with a 4.2-inch 1280 x 768 resolution touchscreen, 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage (expandable via microSD slot).
