NEC Solutions Showcase a 2-Day Success

NEC describes the decision to turn the 2014 Solutions Showcase into a 2 event a success, with "little over" 1500 unique attendees (a 35% increase over 2013) made it to the Velodrome at the London Olympic Park.

"The decision to extend to two days was certainly the right one when we consider the increase in attendees, it was always busy but not overcrowded," NEC says. "Other events running in parallel for the inaugural London Digital Signage Week were also well attended and we are delighted that Showcase has become the foundation to instill new developments, innovations and partnerships-- driving the industry to yet greater achievement.”

The choice of the Velodrome as location was interesting, to say the least-- one could even get on a bake for a Track Bike Experience, although this writer failed to find himself a pair of cycling shorts and adequate footwear…

Big Data, Privacy and Robots Open CeBIT 2014

A discussion between a "Digital Native" and a "RoboThespian" hammers home the theme of "datability," or the quick and responsible use of large amounts of data) at the CeBIT 2014 opening ceremony.

Following the human-robot conversation was a performance by violinist Nicky Benetti, prompting British prime minister David Cameron to remark "violins, music, a robot thespian... this for me is a typical Sunday evening.”

Britain is the official partner country of this year's entirely business-focuses CeBIT.

Apart from big data, privacy was the hot topic at the opening. As German Chancellor Angela Merkel puts it "this digital world has to be given a legal framework, an underlying order... National laws alone will not suffice.”

The Rise of the Robots at CeBIT 2014

The more paranoid of visitors would have all reason to believe CeBIT 2014 is all about science-fiction as robots appear able to take care of anything from driving to even opening ceremony duties.

After all, the show was opened by a so-called "RoboThespian," an Engineered Arts creation designed for use as an educational guide. The robot was arguably the more amusing on-stage presence (in the least it was less mechanical than the "Digital Native") but alas it was too quickly carted off to make way for more human speakers.

Other robots occupying CeBIT include... pole dancers. No, really. Germany's Tobit Software decided to put the talents of British artist Gile Walker to good (?) use with a booth decked out as a nightmare club of the future compete with two robot dancers and a robot DJ with a megaphone for a head. The robot dancers are actually upgraded versions, having made a first CeBIT appearance back in 2012.

CeBIT Goes "100% Business"

CeBIT Goes

A change in director brings a change in direction for the show we love to hate-- CeBIT 2014 goes "100% business," dropping the consumer segment in favour of a purely B2B event.

“We aim to more strongly leverage CeBIT’s core strengths by means of targeted enhancements,” CeBIT managing board member Oliver Frese says. “The event is being placed on a ‘100% business’ track-– exactly in line with the wishes of our customers."

Deutsche Messe rattles statistics from CeBIT 2013 to explain the reasoning behind such a change of heart. Reportedly 82% of CeBIT 2013 attendees were trade visitors, 33% were top-level managers and 60% of visiting professionals have no plans to attend another 2013 IT event.

Thus CeBIT 2014 will drop the four-pillar approach of previous years to instead assign topics to eight self-explanatory "clusters"-- Enterprise Resource Planning & Data Analysis, Enterprise Content Management, Web & Mobile Solutions, IT Services, Security, Communication & Networks, Infrastructure & Data Centers, and Research & Innovations.
