HP Shuffles Management as Sales Drop

In order to "drive ongoing turnaround" HP management gets a shuffle-- and drive the turnaround it needs to, since the company posts a -8% Y-o-Y decline on Q3 2013 revenues worth $27.2 billion.

Net earnings for the quarter drop by -15% Y-o-Y to $1.7bn.

All HP divisions bar software post Y-o-Y declines, causing CEO Meg Whitman to admit "total company Y-o-Y revenue growth in fiscal 2014 is unlikely... That said, I remain confident we are making progress in our turnaround."

Thus, in hopes to at least improve Enterprise Group business HP replaces chief Dave Donatelli with COO Bill Veghte, who retains his current responsibility over HP cloud efforts to effectively unite both portfolios under a single leader.  Read more...

BlackBerry Explores

A troubled BlackBerry forms a special committee to "explore strategic alternatives"-- including possible joint ventures, strategic alliances and even simply selling the company.

Heading the committee is BlackBerry board member and former Goldman Sachs executive Timothy Dattels, together with CEO Thorsten Heins.

"As the Special Committee focuses on exploring alternatives, we will be continuing with our strategy of reducing cost, driving efficiency and accelerating the deployment of BES 10," Heins says.

According to Reuters one alternative BlackBerry might explore is going private, giving itself "breathing room to fix the company's problems out of the public eye." If this happens BlackBerry will not be the first vendor to give leveraged buyouts a go-- Dell is currently trying to do exactly that, if not without a share of, well, shareholder issues.

Panasonic Claims First ReRAM Product

Panasonic claims it will soon start mass-production of the first computer products with mounted ReRAM, the faster, lower-power alternative to NAND flash memory.

Also known as memristor or "memory resistor," ReRAM combines the properties of a resistor and memory in a new circuit element. Memristor technology requires less energy, is faster than present storage technologies and retains information even when the power is off.

Numerous companies are working on ReRAM projects (such as HP and Hynix) but Panasonic insists it is the first to get the technology "in a microcomputer," in this case the 8-bit MN101LR series microcomputer.

Polycom CEO Out Due to Irregularities

Videoconferencing vendor Polycom ends up without a boss after the discovery of expense submission irregularities leads to the resignation of CEO Andrew Miller.

Miller accepts responsibility, and reportedly the irregularities do not have a material impact on current or previous Polycom financial results even if the company will still open an investigation by a shareholder rights law firm.

Miller joined Polycom on 2009, and became top man in 2010. Previously he worked for 11 years at Cisco and before that was Tandberg CEO. He is replaced in the interim by chairman Kevin Parker.

“Andy Miller’s resignation under these circumstances is disappointing and should not be viewed as a reflection of the financial integrity of the company, the strength of our team or our plans for the future,” Parker says.   Read more...
