Apple Buys into "Dark Data"

Apple Buys into

TechCrunch reports Apple has acquired Lattice Data, a specialist in "dark" data-- unstructured data, which the company turns into structured (and thus more usable) information.

The iPhone maker confirms the deal with the usual "“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” statement. Further details of the deal are not known, but TechCrunch claims the purchase cost at least $200 million.

But what is dark data? One can describe it as an information jumble, lacking in labels, categorisation or sense of context. It actually makes the vast majority (around 70-80%) of all data currently produced, and promises at least some value if actual organisation is applied.

VMware Takes on IoT With Pulse

VMware is the next player in the growing Internet of Things (IoT) space-- the company announces the Pulse IoT Centre, a means for companies to manage IoT infrastructure and devices at Dell EMC World.

Described as an opening salvo in a longer-term assault on the IoT industry, Pulse IoT Centre combines VMware AirWatch for device management and vRealize Operations for infrastructure monitoring and troubleshooting. It offers users a single console with tools to visualise devices, perform analytics and real-time infrastructure fixes, and policy-based over-the-air update and security patch management.

It also includes means to wipe all data from compromised devices, and enterprises can set up secure tunnels between devices and applications.

The 20nm 8Gb chips operate at 16Gbps per pin, an industry record. SK Hynix provides a performance example of a graphics card with a 384-bit memory bus equipped with GDDR6, offering a bandwidth of up to 768GBbps. In comparis, an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti equipped with GDDR5X has a bandwidth of under 500GBps.

Intel Cancels Developer Forum!

In a sign of an industry in flux Intel cancels the long-running Intel Developer Forum (IDF) tradeshow, including this summer's IDF17, in order to make way for an "evolved" event mix.

"Intel has evolved its event portfolio and decided to retire the IDF program moving forward," a statement on the IDF17 event website reads. "Thank you for nearly 20 great years with the Intel Developer Forum! Intel has a number of resources available on intel.com, including a Resource and Design Center with documentation, software, and tools for designers, engineers, and developers."

Chipzilla had already cancelled this year's China IDF, but the San Francisco event was expected to happen, if with a "new format." After all IDF is an industry mainstay, having hosted major Intel product launches such as Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs, Optane storage and Omni-Path networking fabric. Then again the cancellation is not that surprising, seeing how all big vendors have moved way from major events (such as CES or Macworld) to smaller announcements held throughout the year.
