Polycom presents a unified cloud solutions strategy with Polycom Cloud Services, together with the launch of Polycom Device Management Services (PDSM), a means for customers to manage and measure telephony devices.

Initially available for audio system, PDMS allows customers to provision, update and secure anything from 5 to 50000 desk and conference room phones via single PDMS-E cloud portal. Service providers get an own version of PDMS in Q3 2018, with means to incorporate Polycom audio device management and analytics into the custom portal experience.

In addition, a API allows service providers to customise the services and analytics available to each customers, turning PDMS into a platform to empower service providers and "open the door to future innovation and exciting development opportunities as endpoints like Polycom Trio get even smarter in the future."

The Kata Containers project, the system for running isolated container workloads-- and first non-OpenStack project hosted by the OpenStack Foundation-- reaches the version 1.0 milestone.

Kata Containers started as a joint effort between Intel and Hyper to create a container-style environment with the same security and isolation features of a traditional virtual machine (VM). To do so the system implements a lightweight VM for every container, meaning each container gets the hardware isolation of a VM but with less of an overhead.

Oracle acquisition DataScience.com, a cloud-based workspace platform for data science projects and workloads. Financial details of the deal are not available.

Founded in 2014, the platform allows data science teams to organise work, easily access data and computing resources, and execute end-to-end model development workflows. It counts a number of leading organisations as customers, including Amgen, Rio Tinto and Sonos, and provides self-service access to open source tools, data and computing resources.

Nutanix moves into SaaS-based multi-cloud compliance, Acropolis SDN-based security and PaaS-based automated database operations with a trio of .NEXT Conference 2018 announcements-- Beam, Flow and Era.

Beam is based on technology from a recent Nutanix acquisition, Binjar Botmetric service. It promises a better means for customers to manage multi-cloud deployments by providing full visibility into overall cloud costs, allowing IT teams to identify unused and underutlised resources and select more size and cost appropriate cloud resources for each application.

Customers also get streamlined visibility into the entire cloud footprint, allowing the tracking of resource consumption by department and group. On the security and regulatory compliance side, Beam allows users to define custom health check policies for compliance audits, and analyse security operations while real-time cloud compliance scans identify risks and violations.
