Red Hat broadens its cloud development platform-- the open source OpenShift Enterprise development platform is now available as an on-premise Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS).

OpenShift Enterprise follows OpenShift Online, the public PaaS offering launched back in May 2011. It shares the same open source code (OpenShift Origin), runs on top of an IaaS stack and uses enterprise-grade technologies such as JBoss Enterprise Application Platform and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Cisco shells out $1.2 billion for more cloud technology and acquires Meraki, a cloud networking solutions provider with offices in New York, London and Mexico.

Meraki offers a cloud-based networking management solution for midmarket customers, providing software, network and device management through a browser-based dashboard. The solution supports BYOD, guest networking, application control, WAN optimisation, application firewall and other networking services.

Global Platform as a Service (PaaS) revenues will reach $1.2 billion in 2012 (up from $900 million in 2011) Gartner reports as the market hosts an increasingly intense battle between cloud vendors and products. 

The analyst forecasts WW PaaS revenues will total $1.5bn in 2013 before reaching $2.9bn by 2016. 

The PaaS category covers the gamut of application infrastructure services, including applications platforms as a service (aPaaS) and integration platforms as a service (iPaaS), as well as specialist cloud-based middleware services such as database platform as a service, business process management platform as a service, messaging as a service and others.  Read more...
