Dell Buys More Cloud

The ongoing process of turning private does not appear to slow down Dell's shift from hardware to services-- the company acquires cloud management software developer Enstratius for an undisclosed sum. 

Previously known as eNStratus, Entratius makes a "cloud agnostic" management tool handling  applications across multiple public, private and hybrid clouds. It also offers cloud optimisation, automation, management, security and compliance tools. 

“Dell, together with Enstratius, is uniquely positioned to deliver differentiated, complete cloud-management solutions to enterprise customers, large and small, empowering them with the efficiency and flexibility in the allocation and use of resources," a Dell statement says.  Read more...

Pivotal Finds Big Investment, Launches PaaS

VMware/EMC big data spin-off Pivotal gets a big investment as it unveils a next-generation PaaS-- colossal conglomerate General Electric (GE) coughs up $105 million for a 10% stake in the venture. 

Following the investment, EMC owns 62%, VMware 28% and GE 10% of Pivotal, a company making first steps as stand-alone entity by announcing Pivotal One, a PaaS offering supposedly "bringing consumer-grade capabilities to the enterprise." 

According to the company Pivotal One integrates new data fabrics, modern programming frameworks, cloud portability and legacy system support within a Cloud Foundry-based platform deeply integrated with Pivotal HD an own version of Hadoop. The PaaS also includes messaging and application frameworks, allows enterprises to launch apps into either commodity hardware or clouds and wires apps into live analytics.  Read more...

Dell and SUSE Team Up in Cloud

SUSE announces the Dell SUSE Cloud Solution-- an OpenStack-powered enterprise-class private cloud solution combining Dell hardware and services with SUSE software. 

The solution uses SUSE Cloud as cloud management reference platform and runs on Dell PowerEdge servers. The OS of choice is OpenStack, while Dell Crowbar handles software installation.

HP Fibre Channel on OpenStack Clouds

HP announces the OpenStack cloud support of 3PAR StoreServ and StoreVirtual storage technologies across iSCSI and Fibre Channel protocols at the OpenStack Summit 2013. 

"Channel partners can use our APIs to provide different customization capabilities to customers that can only be done using open source," HP storage VP of marketing Craig Nunes says.
