HomePlug Gets Interoperability Event

The HomePlug Alliance announces a multi-vendor event for HomePlug Netricity technology-- bringing together Cisco, Itron, Semtech (EnVerv) and Texas Instruments and the low-frequency, narrow-band IEEE 1901.2 standard.

The Netricity program is designed for long-range powerline networking applications, namely outside-the-home, smart grid, smart city and industrial control. Built using frequencies below 500kHz, the technology incorporates an IEE 802.15.4-based media access control (MAC) layer to enabled hybrid (wired + wireless) networks. The program complements and coexists with the high-bandwidth HomePlug AV and AV2 specifications and standards, as well as HomePlug Green PHY for smart home applications.

A10 Networks Updates ACOS

A10 Networks launches ACOS 4.0 and A10 Harmony, an architecture the company says is the foundation of a rapid services integration platform for enterprises, cloud and service provider networks.

A10 Harmony allows developers to integrate intelligent application networking services via high-performance A10 Thunder Series Application Delivery Controllers (ADC). Other enhancements include Secure Interconnect IPsec VPN, SSL Insight, Application Access Management (AAM) and Web Application Firewall (WAF).

The architecture leverages the ACOS platform with open standards, with the A10 Harmony Policy Engine providing intelligence, efficiency and scale, while expanded aXAPI SDK and RESTful APIs enable effective provisioning, analytics telemetry and comprehensive security.

HP Opens SDN App Store

HP Opens the SDN App Store, a means for customers to acquire (and partners to sell) software-defined networking (SDN) network applications together with consulting and support services.

The store carries tools such as network monitors, virtualised firewalls and adaptive load balancers from both HP and six partners.

Applications on offer are divided in 4 circles-- HP (applications built and tested solely by HP), Premium (top selling applications joint-tested by HP and partners), Partner  (applications self-tested by HP partners and reviewed by HP) and Community (open-access and community-supported applications).

On the support side the store offers HP trusted SDN Security Deployment to help with the integration and deployment of multiple SDN security apps, as well as SDN Application and Controller Services and HP Foundation Care and Proactive Care.

Oracle Buys into SDN with Corente

Oracle kicks off the year by snapping up some software-defined networking (SDN)-- specifically wide-area network (WAN) SDN technology provider Corente, a company Oracle acquires for an undisclosed sum.

No doubt a strike against the likes of Cisco and IBM, the acquisition provides Oracle with Cloud Services Exchange, a software-defined WAN virtualisation platform covering the deployment of cloud-based applications and services across global private networks.

According to a company statement the platform delivers, secures and manages distributed applications over diverse networks to any site over any IP networks regardless of transport, application or provider.

Does the Commercial & Industrial IoT Have a Single Set of Requirements?

by Robert Dolin, VP and Chief Technology Officer, Echelon Corp.

The Internet of Things will be an important part of the future in most industries and especially Smart Buildings. Here Robert Dolin, CTO of Echelon Corp., shares a vision on how IoT will come in “different flavours.”

Echelon Corporation develops, markets and supports the world's most proven, open standard, multi-application energy control networking platform. Echelon’s vision from its inception 20 years ago is one of low-cost embedded monitoring and control technology in every electrically controlled device in the world. Today Echelon’s technology platform is embedded in more than 100 million devices, 35 million homes, and 300,000 buildings.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has become an expansive concept, encompassing a broad range of application areas. The IoT is not a single, homogenous entity, however. It can be broken down into the human IoT (HIoT) and the commercial and industrial IoT (IIoT). The IIoT can be further divided into machine-to-machine (M2M) and machines-to-machines (Ms2Ms) segments.
