A Lenovo Server for the Edge

Lenovo presents what it claims is a new class of edge server-- the ThinkSystem SE350 is a compact purpose-built server customers can deploy just about anywhere, be it on a wall, shelf, rack or even on the floor.

According to the company, the SE350 allows for reliable server-class performance at many Edge locations. The rugged design handles temperatures from 0° to 55°C, and also tolerates locations with high dust and vibration, such as construction site trailers and manufacturing floors. Office-friendly acoustics allow deployment in traditional office or branch locations.

IDC: Server Revenues Up 12.6% Y-o-Y in Q4 2018

According to IDC, global server revenues total $23.6 billion in Q4 2018, a 12.6% Y-o-Y increase, marking a 5th consecutive quarter of double-digit growth. Shipment numbers are up by 5% Y-o-Y to reach 3 million units.

Volume server revenue sees a 17.8% Y-o-Y increase to $19bn, while midrange server revenues are up by by 30.3% Y-o-Y to $2.5bn. High-end systems, however, are down by -28.3% Y-o-Y to $2.1bn.

"Reduced demand from hyperscale companies created downward pressure on worldwide server market growth rates during the quarter," the analyst says. "This was offset by increased server sales to enterprise customers and higher average selling prices (ASPs). Enterprises are buying richly configured servers to support resource intensive workloads, resulting in higher ASPs and pushing revenue growth higher than growth from unit shipments."

USB-IF Rebrands USB 3.0 Standards

MWC 2019 sees the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) present a rebranding of the USB 3.0 standard-- the upcoming USB 3.2 will absorb prior USB 3.0 and 3.1 specifications, leading to a perhaps confusing take on USB classification.

Essentially both USB 3.0 and 3.1 will now be considered as generations of the USB 3.2 specification. Thus USB 3.0, which offers speeds up to 5 Gbps, is now USB 3.2 Gen 1. Meanwhile USB 3.1 Gen 2, with support for transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps, becomes USB 3.2 Gen 2. As for what we know as USB 3.2, with throughput reaching 20 Gbps, the standard is designated as USB 3.2 Gen 2x2.
