QLogics Ships its 3rd Generation

QLogic's latest storage network adapters offload fibre channel and TCP/IP processing. This frees up server CPU cycles.

The CNAs are the 8200 series 10GbE, the 3200 series 10GbE ethernet adapter and a cLOM product.

The products perform switch-agnostic VM-to-VM communication with physical machines and employ 10GbE and dual 10GbE ports from a single chip.

Evaluator Group senior analyst John Webster says the CNAs allow network admins to shift server workloads from an iSCSI SAN to FCoE SAN without rebooting servers or waiting for an outage window.

LSI Announces Industry's 1st 6Gb/s SAS Switch

The SAS6160 allows multiple servers to connect to one or more independent external storage systems. This extends the capabilities of SAS in DAS environments.

It features 16 non-blocking 4-lane wide ports to provide a 24GB/s SAS connection per port. The switch uses JBOD or RBOD storage subsystems to support connectivity of up to 1000 SATA and SAS devices.

The embedded SDM utility offers port configuration and zoning, firmware management, diagnostics and SAS topology viewing. This enables reconfiguration without reconnecting cables or adding hardware.  Read more...

European Broadband Coverage Via Satellite

The EU is set to launch the first satellite created to deliver broadband access to European consumers.

The Hylas 1 satellite will provide broadband together with a range of conventional telecommunications services (HDTV broadcast and data distribution services).

It represents 10 years of R&D by the European Space Agency (ESA) and European industry-- UK operator Avanti put up the majority of the budget, while ESA focused on its communications payload.

An estimated 20 million Europeans cannot get high-quality broadband access.

EMEA Slowest to Rebound, But It's at Least a Rebound

With hardware sales in the lead, Gartner says enterprise IT spending in EMEA will rebound in 2011 to reach $795.2 billion (up 1.3% from 2010).

However Gartner also predicts a 2.1% spending decline by 2010's end (total spending of $784.8 billion). This will make EMEA the only region showing an IT spending decline in both 2009 and 2010.

The research company expects W Europe to show the worst decline (-3.3%) and the slowest long-term growth (0.8% compound annual growth through 2014).

W. Europe is not expected to return to stronger enterprise IT Read more...

Marvell Arms Server Market

Marvell unveils its quad-core cloud computing platform, the Armada XP. The Armada carries Arm's latest-- and what Marvell describes as "fastest"-- processor.

The Armada XP platform combines x4 1.6GHz Arm v7 compliant cores with a host of I/O peripherals (x4 PCI-e Gen 2.o units, x4 gigabit networking ports, x16 Marvell Serdes lanes, multiple USB ports).

The company say it delivers the best performance per watt for cloud computing applications. Arm's processor offers 16600 DMIPS performance at less than 10 W power consumption.
