Half of 802.15.4 Chips Sold Not Zigbee-Certified

IMS Research reports less than half of IEEE 802.15.4 ICs shipped in 2009 (20 million) are Zigbee certified.

Due to its fragmented nature-- where a large number of small deals accounts for most of volume sold-- the 802.15.4 IC market is mostly underestimated.

IMS says some application areas are moving to standardised solutions. 802.15.4 ICs using proprietry software will lose 20% market share to ZigBee and RF4CE by 2010's end-- even if their shipments will triple by 2015.

Demand for standardised solutions will continue growing, especially in Read more...

Excellent Server Rooms Through Volume Design

Minkels issues a white paper on server room design and layout-- applying the cubic meters (rather than square meters) or volume available as one of its basic layout principles.

The company says its "volume method" enables the making of better choices quicker, particularly in cooling solution implementation.

The traditional approach using square meters leads to inappropriate initial choices leaing to an increased continuity risk during the data centre's life span.

The white paper keeps the choice of cooling medium in mind-- if one designs a server Read more...

Broadband over Power Line to Rule, Says IEEE

IEEE ratifies 1901™ Broadband over Power Line (BPL) standard, expecting its standard to be the key enabling technology for a wide range of applications including smart energy, transportation (AV in planes, trains etc) and LANs in the home and the enterprise.

Networking products that fully comply with IEEE 1901 will deliver data rates in excess of 500 Mbps in LAN applications. In first-mile/last-mile applications, IEEE 1901-compliant devices will achieve ranges of up to 1500 m. The technology specified by IEEE 1901 uses sophisticated modulation Read more...

Workstation Market on Cautious Growth

Jon Peddie Research says the workstation market heads towards to pre-economic collapse levels as sales reach 849700 units in Q3 2010.

The market shows 31.8% Y-o-Y growth, stronger than what the analyst expects.

The workstation volume leader for 2010 is HP with 40.5% market share. Dell takes second place with 37.5%. The analyst says while HP moves forward in the business, it believes Dell is able to keep up-- if willing.

This year shows slow growth for professional graphics hardware, with WW units reaching 1.14m (down 9.5% sequentially). Read more...
