Ethernet Gets New Standard

The IEEE 802.3 standard (better known as plain old ethernet) gets its first full revision since 2008-- IEEE 802.3-2012 "Standard for Ethernet" as approved by the IEEE Standards Association.

First published in 1985, according to the IEEE the 802.3 standard "defines the physical (PHY) and media access control (MAC) layers of ethernet transmission across wired connections of multiple media."

The latest revision addresses 10Gbit/s Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs), energy efficiency, extension to 40 and 100Gbit/s speeds (while maintaining compatibility Read more...

IDC: Strong Q2 2012 for Enterprise WLANs

The enterprise WLAN market shows a "very strong quarter overall" in EMEA during Q2 2012 according to IDC, with 30.2% Y-o-Y growth despite a -0.5% Y-o-Y decline in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece.

From a global perspective the enterprise WLAN market shows "impressive" 24.8% Y-o-Y growth in Q2 2012. The quarter is also the 7th quarter in a row (or 9 out of the last 10) showing over 20% Y-o-Y growth.

IDC attributes part of the growth to BYOD trend, together with an "additional boost" from the educational segment and other enterprise segmentverticals.  Read more...

Gartner: EMEA Server Market Struggles in Q2 2012

EMEA server shipments total 585000 units in Q2 2012 according to Gartner-- a -4.4% Y-o-Y decline as the server market "continues to struggle" in the face of broader economic challenges.

Revenues are also down, dropping by -11.6% Y-o-Y to reach $3.3 billion. Gartner says Q2 2012 is the 3rd consecutive quarter of shipment declines and the 4th consecutive quarter of revenue declines.

“Each of the three key sub regions saw revenue decline," the analyst continues. "E. Europe by -1.3%, MEA by -0.5% and W. Europe by -14.7%. This weakness was evident in both technological and geographical segments.”

The weakness in EMEA reflects the global market, where server revenues decline by -2.9% Y-o-Y while shipments see slight 1.4% Y-o-Y growth. Read more...

IEEE Pushes for Faster Ethernet

The IEEE worries the current ethernet standard might not be enough for the future-- and thus forms the IEEE 802.3 Industry Connections Higher Speed Ethernet Consensus group to develop "the next speed of ethernet."

What should this "next speed of ethernet" be? The organisation proposes capacities will reach 1 terabit per second (1Tbps) in 2015 and 10Tbps in 2020.

As streaming video and social networking lead to "an exponential climb" in global bandwidth requirements, the IEEE believes large-scale networks will need more and more speed if they Read more...

RGB Spectrum Debuts Secure KVM

According to RGB Spectrum, secure KVM is now attainable through the use of its External Desktop Agent (EDA) in SinglePoint KvM and Multipoint Control Room Management System (MCMS) installations.

SinglePoint KvM enables a unified display space where users control the layout of the visual presentation as well as the operation of the computers displayed, all with a single mouse and keyboard.

MCMS expands on this functionality in multi-user environments, such as control rooms, through a simplified system of preferences and priorities. This Read more...
