IDC: Converged Systems as

Global converged system revenues total $3.5 billion in Q2 2018, IDC reports, a 9.9% Y-o-Y increase, the result of HCI allowing companies to reduce infrastructure complexity and promote further consolidation.

The analyst divides the converged systems market in 3 segments-- certified reference systems & integrated infrastructure, integrated platforms and hyperconverged systems. The certified reference systems & integrated infrastructure market is worth $1.3bn in Q2 2018, making 38.1% of overall revenues despite a -13.9% Y-o-Y decline. Dell is the largest supplier, with $639.8 million in sales and 47.5% share, followed by Cisco NetApp (35.7% share) and HPE (8.1%).

Integrated platform sales are down by -12.5% Y-o-Y in Q2 2018, reaching $729.4m and making 20.7% of total converged systems market revenues. Oracle is the top vendor with revenues of $440.6m, capturing 60.4% share of the market segment. On the other hand Q2 2018 hyperconverged system revenues are up by 78.1% Y-o-Y to reach $1.5bn, 41.2% of the market.

DVIGear Adds DVI AOC to HyperLight Cables

DVIGear launches DVI cables to the HyperLight series-- a new generation of Active Optical Cables (AOC) with support for the extension of DVI 1.0 signals and, with an optional adapter cable, HDMI.

The cables are HDCP 1.4 compliant and support signals with aggregate data rates up to 4.95Gbps. Such features enable HyperLight cables to support any single-link DVI resolution with cable lengths up to 328m. Construction is in a hybrid design of four POF (Polyfluorinated Optical Fiber) and 6 copper wires, allowing for a rugged and flexible cable with a minimum bend radius of only 2mm.

Installers can remove the two DVI docking connectors in order to minimise cable diameter, revealing a connector cross-section of just 13.9 x 14.2mm. The docking connectors include fixation screws for added security, as do the removable pull covers. As a result the cables are easy to install, even in narrow conduits or plenum air spaces.

Nvidia Intros TensorRT Hyperscale Platform

Nvidia uses GTC Japan 2018 to announce the TensorRT Hyperscale Platform-- a piece of datacentre hardware the company describes as the "most advanced inference accelerator for voice, video, image, recommendation services."

“Our customers are racing toward a future where every product and service will be touched and improved by AI,” the company says. “The Nvidia TensorRT Hyperscale Platform has been built to bring this to reality — faster and more efficiently than had been previously thought possible.”

The TensorRT Hyperscale Platform is built on Turing-based Tesla T4 GPUs and a comprehensive set of inference software, namely the TensorRT 5 inference optimiser and the TensorRT inference server. The Tesla T4 GPU carries 320 Turing tensor cores and 2560 CUDA cores, allowing for flexible multi-precision capabilities ranging from FP32 to FP16 to INT8, as well as INT4, all inside a 75W PCIe form factor. Performance clocks at 65 teraflops for FP64, 130 TOPS for INT8 and 260 TOPS for INT4.

Hyperconverged Integrated Systems to Hit the Mainstream Soon?

The hyperconverged integrated systems (HCIS) market will be worth almost $5 billion in 2019, making 24% of the overall integrated systems market, Gartner reports-- meaning it is well on the way to reach mainstream status over the next 5 years.

Gartner defines HCIS as a platform offering shared compute and storage resources, based on software-defined storage, software-defined compute, commodity hardware and a unified management interface. Hyperconverged systems deliver main value through software tools, commoditising underlying hardware. The analyst also points that while the overall integrated market continues to grow, HCIS will cannibalise from other segments.

"We are on the cusp of a 3rd phase of integrated systems," Gartner continues. "This evolution presents IT infrastructure and operations leaders with a framework to evolve their implementations and architectures."

Juniper Expands Ericsson Partnership

Juniper Networks announces an expansion of the 18-year partnership with Ericsson-- one leading to the delivery of a comprehensive end-to-end 5G solution leveraging the portfolios of both companies.

5G is expected to bring the next generation of business and consumer services, but the increase in connectivity, network traffic and customer expectations bring challenges in the management of a mobile transport network in a cost-effective way. Evolving 5G use cases, such as connected cars, AR/VR and 8K video streaming, place additional demands across the network, demanding tighter integration between 5G radio, core and transport layers of an end-to-end mobile network.
