An OpenPOWER Consortium for Data Centres

Google, Mellanox, Nvidia and Tyan join IBM to form the OpenPOWER Consortium-- an open development alliance with plans to boost the popularity of POWER architecture by licensing Big Blue server hardware and firmware.

The alliance makes POWER hardware and software open source and allows other vendors to license POWER IP. In other words, IBM wants more datacentre customers to develop own POWER-based hardware, allowing it to take over a bigger slice of the datacentre market.

"Developers now have access to an expanded and open set of server technologies for the first time," IBM says. "This type of "collaborative development" model will change the way data center hardware is designed and deployed.”  Read more...

Assmann Cables Get Facelift

The Assmann patch cable series gets what the company describes as a "complete facelift," one complete with new connector/cable colours and revamped locking lever protection.

Three different plug colours helps customers identify the category of the cable in use-- either blue (CAT 5e), red (CAT6) or yellow (CAT6A).

Cables are available in either standard or different colours, allowing one to assign specific colours to specific purposes for an improved first glance overview of networking cabinets.

GÉANT Reaches Terabit Speeds

European scientists now can network at even faster speeds-- DANTE completes a 2 terabits-per-second (2Tbps) backbone upgrade on GÉANT, the pan-European network connecting the European National Research and Education Networks (NRENs).

GÉANT services 50 million European research and education users across 32000 universities, schools, research institutes and hospital. It consists of 50000km of backbone infrastructure, with the upgrade replacing legacy equipment with "leading edge" transmission and switching technologies.

Such upgrades include the Infinera DTN-X optical transmission platform and Juniper MX-series routers.   Read more...

Intel Wants to "Re-Architect" Datacentres

Intel Wants to

Intel outlines ambitions to "re-architect" the infrastructure of humble datacentres as it gives more details on the C2000 family (codenamed "Avoton" and "Rangeley") of next generation Atom processors.

Making part of such a grand plan is Rack Scale Architecture (RSA), a design promising to "dramatically increase the utilization and flexibility of the datacenter to deliver new services." Already in use by Rackspace, RSA combines Xeon processors, ethernet controllers and SSD storage built into compact, low-power cards.

"Datacenters are entering a new era of rapid service delivery," Intel says. "Across network, storage and servers we continue to see significant opportunities for growth." Read more...

Slow Demand for 40/100GE

Slow Demand for 40/100GE

Despite a global industry with plenty of want for more bandwidth, too high equipment costs dampen demand for Ultra-High-Bandwidth (UHB) 40/100GE, Heavy Reading reports.

The technology has already gained substantial ground through carrier networks, but adoption of corresponding services sold by said carriers remains in its infancy.

"Ethernet has continued to gain momentum as the predominant choice for 'big data' connectivity, giving rise to the start of a move up from now well-established, high-bandwidth 10GE to UHB Ethernet networking," the analyst continues.  Read more...
