Object storage system vendor Cloudian acquires Infinity Storage, an Italian specialist in software-defined file storage solution. Financial details of the deal are not available.

Cloudian says the acquisition will allow it to better integrate file and object storage into a "limitlessly scalable" storage pool able to reduce TCO by over 70% compared to traditional multi-silo NAS systems.

The two companies already have a history together-- Cloudian HyperFile NAS controller, a means to deliver enterprise-class file services from Cloudian HyperStore, is the result of a collaboration between the two. Cloudian HyperFile incorporates all NAS features enterprise applications demand, including SMB(CIFS)/NFS support, snapshot, WORM, non-disruptive failover, scale-out performance, POSIX compliance and Active Directory integration.

Samsung announces it has started mass producing its biggest Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) SSD yet-- the PM1643, a 30.72TB drive featuring 64-layer 3-bit 512Gb V-NAND chips.

Aimed for enterprise systems, the PM1643 doubles the capacity of the previous 15.36TB Samsung SSD through the combination of 32 new 1TB NAND flash packages. Each package is comprised of 16 stacked layers of 512Gb V-NAND chips, and allows the storage of approximately 5700 5GB HD movie files in a 2.5-inch device.

Western Digital announces a G-Technology external storage addition- the G-Speed Shuttle, an ultraportable RAID storage solution available with Thunderbolt 3 or EV series bay adapters.

The 4-bay G-Speed Shuttle with Thunderbolt 3 supports transfer speeds of up to 1000MB/s, allowing users to transfer an hour of 30fps 4K footage in a few minutes. It offers up to 48TB of storage via removable Ultrastar 7200RPM enterprise-class drives with a choice of RAID 0, 1, 5 or 10 configurations.

Meanwhile EV series adapter option also offers Thunderbolt 3 support, only with a pair of EV series bay adapters for cross-functionality with EV series drives and readers. It features up to 24TB storage and transfer rates reaching 500MB/s.

Synology releases 3 storage packages for its network-attached storage (NAS) products-- Drive, Office and Moments, enabling users to store, backup and synchronise files while ensuring privacy and security.

Moments allows users to backup photos from PCs and smartphones to a Synology NAS. It uses deep-learning analytics to automatically identify people, places and objects in photos, before sorting in appropriate albums. Meanwhile Drive is a revamp of the Cloud Station Suite file syncing software. It promises simplified data management on Synology NAS, allowing data syncing across multiple devices and easier office collaboration.
