Flash Memory Gets Ever Smaller

SanDisk and Toshiba's developments in NAND flash memory get even smaller-- producing a 64Gb X2-based monolithic chip with 19nm technology.

The 19nm 64Gb X2 device will see sampling this quarter, before high-volume production following Q2 2011. At that time Sandisk will also start producing X3 products with the 19nm technology.

The process is the company's most advanced yet, and should allow for smaller high capacity removable and embedded storage devices for use in all sorts of mobile devices, from tablets to mobile phones.

Seagate's SSD Plans

Seagate launches its latest duo of enterprise-class SSDs as it plans to further expand into the SSD market segment.

The Pulsar.2 SSD is the company's first MLC-enabled (up to 800GB) SSD aimed for the enterprise market, supporting SAS and SATA interfaces. It carries the companies latest in data error detection and correction.

Meanwhile the Pusar XT.2 is a 2.5", SLC-based enterprise SSD with up to 400GB of storage. Seagate says it is its fastest drive yet, with random reads at 48K/writes at 22K IOPS and sequential reads at 360MB/sec and writes at Read more...

LSI's Second RAID Generation

LSI announces the availability of its second-generation MegaRAID 6Gb/s SATA+SAS RAID controller cards at CeBIT 2011, enabling customers to realise the full performance benefits of SSD deployments.

Power the cards is the company's dual-core 6Gb/s SAS ROC IC, delivering performance levels greater than 200000 RAID 5 random IOPS (a 3x performance improvement compared to previous-generation products). Using a single LSI MegaRAID FastPath enabled controller connected to x8 SSDs, users can also boost performance to up to 465000 RAID 5 IOPS.

Higher Density Storage for Enterprise

UIT launches its SV4060j at CeBIT 2011, an enterprise class JBOD with single or hot swappable dual controllers housing up to 60 SAS or SATA 3.5" HDDs in 4U form factor.

The hot swap ability covers power supplies, cooling modules and HDDs, all designed for replacing without the need for system power down. A specially-designed cooling system complete with large speed-controlled fans keeps HDDs at an optimum temperature.

The company says 60 HDDs in a 4U enclosure equates to 30 TV per U-- packing a punch in terms of form factor and capacity.

World's Most Secure SSD?

SecureDrives calls their PSD series "the world's most secure solid-state hard drive.

Recent press highlights vulnerability of data on SSD but SecureDrives showed at CeBIT the ability to physically destroy the info on data chips (whether tampered with or or owner's request.)

Add to this an ultra-secure and randomly generated AES 256-bit CBC encryption key, constant GSM monitoring, a dedicated device management control service and you’ve got "the only SSD that meets every data security act in the EU."
