Enterprise SSDs at IDF 2013

Intel unveils the SSD Professional Family at Intel Developer Forum 2013-- with product lines including the Pro 1500 Series available in a number of capacities and form factors.

The 1500 series has drives in the traditional 2.5-inch format, with 20nm MLC flash boasting up to 540MBps sequential read and 490MBps sequential write speeds (with random reads at 41000 IOPS and random writes at 80000 IOPS) paired with hardware-level 256-bit AES encryption and annual failure rates of around 1%.

It also features drives in the smaller M.2 form factor. Designed for use with ultrabooks, Intel promises ultra-slim M.2 SSDs reduce idle power by over 90% (compared to HDDs), allowing for longer battery lives.  Read more...

EMC VNX Goes Flash First

EMC updates the 2-year old VNX midrange storage product family with a hybrid flash-first lineup able to take advantage of multi-core processors for a "major" performance boost.

The storage systems (VNX5200, VNX5400, VNX5600, VNX5800, VNX7600, VNX8000 and VNX-F) assume the customer already uses at least some flash storage, and accelerates virtual application and file performance by what EMC claims is up to 400% via MCx (multi-core optimisation) software.

According to the company the new VNX reaches 1.1 million IOPS with a maximum bandwith capacity of 6PB, allowing it to run FAST caching software with increased granularity.  Read more...
