Netgear Updates Rack-Mount Storage

Netgear presents a refresh of the ReadyNAS network-attached storage (NAS) lineup at IFA 2016 with 3 rack-mount systems, the ReadyNAS 3312, ReadyNAS 4312S and ReadyNAS 4312X.

The 3 models are 2U rack-mount network storage systems with 12-bay capacity for up to 120TB and 600TB of total storage in expansion mode. The ReadyNAS 4312S amd 4312X feature 5th generation Intel Xeon Enterprise Server processors and dual 10-gigabit ethernet ports for what Netgear describes as a data storage package able to keep up with the growth in production and consumption of data while providing consistent performance.

The ReadyNAS 4312S and 4312X are scalable through best-in-class processing and memory expansion for scaling VMs, backups and file servers. They integrate into any system via 10Gb copper or fibre network respectively, and interoperate with 10Gb switching solutions. Customers can also connect the systems to dedicated SFP+ or 10GBASE-T switches, and the 4312X offers backwards compatibility with 1GbE switching.

Intel Expands Enterprise SSD Lineup

Intel presents 6 enterprise SSDs-- all featuring 3D NAND technology and designed as a cost-effective traditional HDD replacement in datacentre and Internet of Things applications.

“These new SSDs reflect Intel’s 30-year commitment to memory technologies and our long-term plan to transform the economics of storage with trusted, breakthrough 3D NAND technology from Intel,” the company says. “Intel is uniquely positioned to address multiple market segments simultaneously from consumer to business, Internet of Things and datacentre [..] This broad array of new 3D NAND SSDs expands the reach of PCIe solutions.”

The SSDs support the NVMe protocol for quicker throughput than SATA with HDDs.

For datacentres, Chipzilla offers the P3520 series-- SSDs optimised for cost-effective performance in read-intensive applications, such as storage virtualisation and web hosting, in capacities ranging from 450GB up to 2TB. Also available is the DC S3520 series, described by the company as better suited for entry-level customers making the shift from HDDs to SATA SSDs.

Intel Tests Optane SSDs on the Cloud

Enterprises curious to try Intel's 3D XPoint storage can soon do so over the cloud, as the Chipzilla will soon provide free remote access to systems equipped with Optane SSDs based on the technology.

The test systems allow users to run benchmarks confirm whether claims on the technology are true or not, as well as optimise software for better read/write performance. According to Intel 3D Xpoint technology is 10x faster than standard SSDs, making it fast enough to act as both storage and a DRAM substitute (through the application of software-defined memory technology).

Micron Packs QuantX SSDs With 3D XPoint Memory

Micron announces QuantX-- a line of SSDs featuring 3D XPoint non-volatile memory for performance results the company claims are 10 times better than than "the best" NAND flash-based SSDs.

Prototype QuantX models using a PCIe gen 3 interface also show write speeds of less than 20 microseconds and read speeds of 10ms. Access to 4 PCIe channels delivers IOPS reaching 900000, a number an 8-lane PCIe connection boosts to 1.9m IOPS.

"Micron QuantX solutions are expected to perform well for low queue depth workloads and will show noticeable improvement in traversing large graph trees," the company says. "With Micron QuantX products and systems, you bring the workload and we’ll bring results!"
