SanDisk Buys Fusion-io

In an effort to bolster its flash capabilities and gain a bigger chunk of the enterprise market SanDisk acquires data centre storage developer Fusion-io for $1.1 billion in cash.

“Fusion-io will accelerate our efforts to enable the flash-transformed data center, helping companies better manage increasingly heavy data workloads at a lower total cost of ownership,” SanDisk says.  “Customers will benefit from the addition of Fusion-io’s leading PCIe solutions to SanDisk’s vertically integrated business model.”

The acquisition follows the current storage industry trend toward vertical integration, as well as that of big vendors buying smaller specialist companies. SanDisk already stabs at enterprise flash, but it hopes the Fusion-io buy will broaden both its product and technology portfolios.

Intel Adds NVMe to PCIe SSDs

Intel's Computex 2014 presence involved more than tablet device processors-- it also saw the company boost its enterprise PCIe SSDs with the addition of Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) technology.

NVMe is a storage interface protocol defining a scalable architecture that "unlocks the potential of PCIe interface SSDs." According to Intel the technology improves throughput by 6x, reduces latencies beyond those of 6Gbps SATA SSDs and increase processor utilisation while scaling capacity and performance.

The first commercial product featuring NVMe technology was a Samsung 1.6TB SSD inside the Dell PowerEdge R920 server.

Seagate Buys LSI Flash Businesses

Seagate acquires the LSI Advanced Solutions Division (ASD) and Flash Components Division (FCD) from semiconductor supplier Avago Technologies for $450 million in cash.

Avago bought LSI back in December 2013 for $6.6 billion.

The two LSI divisions acquired by Seagate provide the company with established enterprise PCIe flash and SSD controller production capabilities. Chief LSI products include the SandForce SF2000 and SF3700 controllers.

IBM, Fujifilm Collaborate Storage Tape

IBM and Fujifilm announce a team-up in super-dense magnetic tape storage-- a  "linear magnetic particulate tape" with storage density of 85.9 billion bits per square inch, or 154 terabytes on standard LTO cartridge.

Current LTO6 cartridges hold a maximum of 2.5TB.

Currently in prototype form, the tape features Fujifilm's NANOCUBIC barium ferrite (BaFe) fine-grinding techniques paired with an IBM tape head with fine enough control to position over the tape with nano-scale accuracy.

The two companies also make use of algorithms for reliable operation even with an ultra-narrow 90nm wide giant magnetoresistive (GMR) reader.
