Police Shut Down Illegal Datacentre in Former NATO Bunker!

The Associated Press reports German police have shut down a datacentre installed in a former NATO bunker-- one hosting sites dealing with illegal activities such as drug sales and child pornography.

The former military bunker is found in Traben-Trarbach, a town on the Mosel River in W. Germany. Dubbed the "CyberBunker," the datacentre promised "bulletproof" hosting for illegal services. One such service was "Wall Street Market," a criminal marketplaces selling drugs, stolen financial data and hacking tools that was taken down earlier this year. Furthermore, the datacentre was used in a 2016 DDoS attack on Deutsche Telekom that knocked out around 1 million customers' routers.

IDC: WIN10 Transition Spurs EMEA PC Shipments

EMEA traditional PC shipments (combining desktops, notebooks and workstations) reached 71.7 million units in 2019, says IDC. Windows 7 end-of-support generated a strong pipeline of deals to squeak out the 0.2% increase.

According to the market analyst, while slow demand and high inventory continue to affect the consumer market, the Windows 10 refresh of the commercial market should be sufficient to offset an overall negative trend.

W. Europe continues to drive the market in 2019, but CEE is set to pick up the pace in 2020 and continue growing through to 2023. MEA should be soft in 2020, before gaining stability until 2023.

"The Western PC market gained further momentum in Q2 2019, primarily boosted by the Windows 10 transition in the commercial segment," IDC says. "Despite CPU shortages constraining the supply chain, efficient planning by OEMs toward order fulfillment supported strong results across both the private and public segments. The outlook for 2019H2 remains strong as demand is expected to strengthen from the SMB space, supported by large and very large businesses as Windows 7 nears end of life."

IDC: Blockchain Opportunity Spreading Across Europe

Blockchain growth is set to be continuous in Europe, IDC predicts, growing from $800 million in 2019 to $4.9 billion in 2023 at a CAGR of 65.1% for the 2018-2023 forecast period.

According to the analyst, such growth is the result of knowledge about opportunities in the blockchain spreading from big enterprises to emerging startups looking to ensure secure and reliable management for money, personal data and assets, a must in a digitalised and data-driven market. After all, perception of blockchain is moving away from being solely a cryptocurrency tool and a financial-only technology, even if the banking still accounts for 31% of total 2019 spending. Cross-border payments and trade finance are teh fastest-growing banking use cases.
