IDC: W. European Printers Remain in Decline

IDC reports Q1 2017 W. European printer and multifunction (MFP) sales are down by -0.9% Y-o-Y, with negative sales performance in unit terms in both inkjet and laser units, even if the value for the laser market is actually up.

The overall market remains in constant decline since Q2 2015-- and Q1 2017 sees a 43000 unit decline, with a market of over 5 million devices. The decline is largely due to the contraction in consumer printing, but is relatively in line with forecast. On the other hand, revenues are up by 4% Y-o-Y, with inkjet revenues dropping by -4.3% while laser revenues are up by 5.4%.

Laser printer shipments are down by -0.9% in Q1 2017 but revenues are up, an indication prices are holding in many markets. Laser market ASPs are up by 5.4%, marking higher specification products shipping, including production.

What You Need to know About Printer Trends

Printers might not be enterprise best sellers, but that does not mean customers haves stopped buying them-- the "paperless office" is still some time away, and until then printers retain a mission-critical place in just about every business.

According to a recent IDC report, printers and MFPs are on something of a decline in W. Europe, with negative performance on the inkjet side even if laser printers are on the increase. This is a trend seen throughout all mature markets, and is at least in part due to the different way employees of different ages work. Millennial-aged employees prefer using digital devices, while older workers continue to use papers, leading to offices where some rarely print while others want to print just about everything.

In a report on the printer market in CEE, IDC repeats such concerns, stating "the ongoing digitalisation of paper-based processes in business, together with the increasing preference for electronic documents among both businesses and consumers, are expected to be the major inhibitors for sales of printing devices in developed CEE countries."

IDC: Mixed Performance for W. European Printer Market

The W. European printer and multifunction (MFP) market sees shipments decline by -1.5% Y-o-Y in Q3 2016, IDC reports-- with negative performance in inkjet printers but a positive trend for the laser market.

Shipments total 5.3 million units with a 78407 decrease compared to last year. The analyst blames such declines on the contraction in consumer printing, even if it is "relatively in line" with forecasts.

That said, revenues are on the up-- specifically by 3% Y-o-Y-- with business inkjets leading to a small 1.5% increase in inkjets, and laser revenues growing by 3.2%. Meanwhile laser printers increased by 1.9% in Q3 2015, a "sharp contrast" with the negative trend seen in W. Europe for the past 5 quarters. Laser revenues increased more than shipments, indicating prices in many markets and are holding, leading to a laser ASP increase of 1.2% in Q3 2016.
