Microsoft Details Windows 10, Hololens at Build 2015

Microsoft reveals more Windows 10 plans at Build 2015, such a new lock screen, a renamed Internet Explorer replacement and means for running iOS and Android apps on the OS-- even if the show was arguably stolen by an adorable HoloLens-powered robot.

Of course, Windows 10 remains the main focus of the conference, where Microsoft declared it expects to see the OS run on no less than 1 billion devices within 2 or 3 years of release. As Windows chief Terry Myerson puts it, "no other platform working in any ecosystem is available on 1 billion devices," but with free upgrades for existing Windows users, new (and old!) devices and enterprise-friendly plans, the company might just manage to reach such a total.

For the curious, Windows 8 license sales reached 200 million in around 15 months.

The Windows Server EOL Opportunity

According to Spiceworks Windows Server 2003 end of life (EOL) represents a $100 billion opportunity in migration-related solutions of the hardware, software, cloud-based solutions and associated service variety.

The total comes from "The Great IT Upgrade," a January 2015 survey of 1300 IT professionals in EMEA, N. America and Asia Pacific covering the 14 July 2015 ultimatum of official Windows Server 2003 support.

According to the survey 61% of companies still run Windows Server 2003-- representing millions of installations across the world. Only 15% of respondents have fully migrated, while 48% are partially migrated, 28% remain in the planning stages and 8% have no migration plans.

Of the survey respondents with no migration plans, 85% admit security concerns, 72% are concerned with software compatibility and 66% express worries regarding compliance risks.

Windows 10 Says Hello to Security

Windows 10 Says Hello to Security

Microsoft reveals what it describes as a "personal computing" feature for Windows 10-- Windows Hello, a password replacement based on biometric authentication, such as fingerprint, iris or facial recognition.

"You-- uniquely you-- plus your device are the keys to your Windows experience, apps, data and even websites and services-- not a random assortment of letters and numbers that are easily forgotten, hacked, or written down and pinned to a bulletin board," the company announcement reads.

The type of biometric authentication Hello uses depends on the hardware available in the machine in question. This means either fingerprint readers or, in case of facial recognition, cameras with built-in infrared sensor (such as the Intel RealSense 3D camera). Microsoft adds the security it offers enterprise-grade, and should meet the requirements of most, if not all, organisations.

Cisco Expands Big Data with Hadoop

Cisco plans for the data explosion to be brought about by the Internet of Things (IoT) with the signing of resale agreements with Apache Hadoop-powered software developers Cloudera, Hortonworks and MapR.

As a result customers get single touch Hadoop-- in either Cloudera, Hortonworks or MapR flavours-- deployment and management across Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) rack and blade servers via the recently launched UCS Director Express for Big Data.

The Hadoop offerings will also be integrated into the Cisco Data Virtualisation environment, allowing users to "abstract, access and query data and deliver it into a Hadoop cluster for cost-effective processing and data management."

Pivotal (partly) Open Sources Big Data Suite

Core components of the Pivotal Big Data Suite-- specifically HAWQ (enterprise SQL on Hadoop), Greenplum Database (massively parallel processing analytics) and GemFire (in-Memory NoSQL database)-- are going open source.

As a result the Pivotal Big Data Suite supports public, private and hybrid clouds, as well as bare metal commodity hardware, appliance-based delivery and virtualised instances. In addition Pivotal offers Cloud Foundry Operations Manager for as-a-service Big Data Suite capability inside and with Cloud Foundry applications.

“By sharing Pivotal HD, HAWQ, Greenplum Database and GemFire capabilities with the open source community, we are contributing to the market as a whole the necessary components to build solutions that make up a next generation data infrastructure," the company says. "Releasing these technologies as open source projects will only help accelerate adoption and innovation for our customers.”
