More Organisations Going for Open-Source

Gartner reveals more than 50% of 547 IT organisations in 11 countries use open-source software (OSS)-- with nearly one-third saying its due to reasons of flexibility, innovation and shorter development times. 

Around 22% of organisations use OSS across all departments, while 46% implement OSS solutions in specific departments or projects. 21% are currently evaluating OSS options.

However, only one-third of respondents have a formal OSS policy in place.

Avaya's web.alive Goes Cloud-Based

Avaya launches cloud-based on-demand purchasing options and features for its web.alive platform. 

The platform's new purchasing options make it available as a service (via monthly subscription or annual concurrent user based pricing). 

The update also includes a number of new features, including an enchanced 3D audio engine, built-in collaboration tools (including desktop sharing and cooperative web browsing), new templates and a whole range of analytics tools. A Second Version from Bitrix

Bitrix announces the second version of its Virtual Appliance-- a free dedicated, ready-to-use solution for running social collaboration and e-commerce applications in VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, Parallels Virtuozzo and Amazon EC2. 

The appliance allows the installation of Bitrix's Intranet and Site Manager on the same physical server-- sharing it with applications like e-mail, proxy and CRM. 

It is also compatible with free virtualisation tools (such as VMware Player) and is usable for 3rd party PHP applications.

Remote Desktop Software Gets Update

ISL LightISL Online releases version 3.3 of its ISL Light remote desktop support software, introducing a turbo sharing feature. 

The new version offers x2 main settings for desktop sharing-- "high speed"  and "best quality" (allows users to share HD content, including multimedia software, videos and CAD). 

It also makes session starting easier, by sending a session code as a link to the client via email.

The update is free for all existing SaaS and Server License users, while a free trial is available on ISL's website.
