Microsoft Takes HoloLens 2 to the Workplace

Microsoft confirms teasers of a HoloLens sequel appearing at MWC 2019 with the presentation of the, well, HoloLens 2-- an updated on the "mixed reality" headset aimed primarily for use on the job, not the home.

As an upgrade on the first Microsoft headset, the HoloLens 2 offers double the field of view even as it maintains the same 47 pixels per degree of sight. The company does not give exact numbers on the matter, instead saying it is the equivalent of moving from a 720p TV to a 2K set for each eye. The headset tracks the retinas to work out what the user is looking at, and uses a new "time-of-flight" depth sensor to track the hands without need for a controller.

Lenovo Takes on Consumption-Based Datacentres

Lenovo takes the cue from the likes of Dell EMC, HPE and Cisco to present TruScale Infrastructure Services-- a program enabling customers to use hardware and services either on-premises or at another site without need to buy the equipment.

“Lenovo’s TruScale as-a-Service offering is truly revolutionary, changing how IT departments procure and refresh their data center infrastructure. With our subscription-based model, customers pay for what they use, eliminating upfront capital purchase risk,” the company says. “Our offering can be applied to any configuration that meets the customer’s needs-- whether storage-rich, server-heavy, hyperconverged or high-performance compute-- and can be scaled as business dictates.”

Remote support capabilities are a priority requirement for purpose-built and ruggedised devices used in specific jobs in warehouses, manufacturing facilities and retail outlets. Such capabilities will be even more in demand in the future, as more business-critical applications and workflows move to new form factors and locations outside the office.

The Intel Choice of CEO: Bob Swan

Intel decides on names a 7th CEO in its 50-year history-- and it is no other than CFO Bob Swan, the man leading the company in the interim for the past 7 months since the resignation of previous CEO Brian Krzanich.

Chipzilla announced the immediate resignation of Krzanich on June 2018, after learning he had a "consensual relationship" with a fellow employee, a violation of company non-fraternisation policies.

Swan has been Intel CFO since 2016, and comes from a primarily financial and investment background. He was CFO of eBay for 9 years, starting in 2006, before joining venture capital General Atlantic. Swan was also the CFO, COO and CEO of Webvan, a grocery delivery startup that was one of the many victims of the 2000 dot-com market crash.
