Juniper Networks Finds CEO

Juniper Networks finds a CEO following the retirement of Kevin Johnson-- former Verizon CTO and CIO Shaygan Kheradpir takes seat as CEO and board of director member from 1 January 2014.

The appointment is perhaps surprising since Kheradpir comes from the service provider, not the enterprise, arena. A 10-year Verizon veteran, Kheradpir is credited with pushing Verizon into the broadband business, leading development of the N. American provider's $12 billion FiOS business.

Kheradpir left Verizon for Barclays on 2011, taking the post of COO and CTO.

Acer Struggles, Drops CEO

Following record Q3 22013 net loss of $442.19 million on revenues reaching $3.11 billion Acer CEO and chairman J.T. Wang will quit the company, with restructuring and further job losses to follow at the Taiwanese PC maker.

“Acer encountered many complicated and harsh challenges in the past few years," Want says. "With the consecutive poor financial results, it is time for me to hand over the responsibility to a new leadership team to path the way for a new era.

J.T. Wang took the CEO position on April 2011, following the resignation of then CEO and president Gianfranco Lanci. He will remain chairman until June 2014, and will be replaced as CEO from January 2014 by current corporate president Jim Wong.

Meanwhile the company also turns to founder and former CEO Stan Shih for advice, creating a Transformation Advisory Committee (TAC) with Shih as chairman and company co-founder George Huang as exec secretary.  Read more...

BlackBerry Receives Investment, Drops CEO

BlackBerry shelves plans of selling itself to the lowest bidder as it receives $1 billion in funding from major shareholder Fairfax Financial and a group of institutional investors.

As well as much needed cash, the company formerly known as RIM also gets a change in leadership-- CEO Thorsten Heins steps down, replaced in the interim is John S. Chen. A man familiar with ailing companies, Chen is most famous for turning enterprise application vendor Sybase from "very, very dead company" into one sold to SAP for nearly $6 billion back in 2010.

How Does Amazon Really Do Business?

Earlier this week Amazon announced its Q3 2013 results, and continues recording losses ($25 million) even as sales are up (by 24% Y-o-Y). Is Amazon the biggest non-profit organisation around? Not really, says former employee Eugene Wei in an analysis of what such results really mean.

Wei explains the Amazon business model in 2 sentences-- "Amazon is a classic fixed cost business model, it uses the Internet to get maximum leverage out of its fixed assets, and once it achieves enough volume of sales, the sum total of profits from all those sales exceed its fixed cost base, and it turns a profit. It already has exceeded this hurdle in its past."

In other words Amazon is not so much as making losses as playing the long game-- pouring cash into massive investments (such as fulfillment centres and datacentres) it hopes will pay for themselves later on. As Wei puts it Amazon has "boundless ambition," and wants to to eat global retail, the mobile device arena and even the cloud market.

Juniper Beats Q3 Estimates, Cuts Jobs

Juniper Networks Q3 2013 revenues reach $1.19 billion, beating earlier estimates with 6% Y-o-Y growth (or 3% Q-o-Q) making the period the 5th consecutive quarter of Y-o-Y growth for the networking vendor.

However the company wants to streamline operations even further, with plans to slash 280 jobs by end 2013-- a move CFO Robyn Denholm describes as the result of "restructuring and rebalancing."

Meanwhile CEO Kevin Johnson says the company is close to finding his successor, saying "We are in the later stages of that process."
