In a sign of an industry in flux Intel cancels the long-running Intel Developer Forum (IDF) tradeshow, including this summer's IDF17, in order to make way for an "evolved" event mix.

"Intel has evolved its event portfolio and decided to retire the IDF program moving forward," a statement on the IDF17 event website reads. "Thank you for nearly 20 great years with the Intel Developer Forum! Intel has a number of resources available on intel.com, including a Resource and Design Center with documentation, software, and tools for designers, engineers, and developers."

Chipzilla had already cancelled this year's China IDF, but the San Francisco event was expected to happen, if with a "new format." After all IDF is an industry mainstay, having hosted major Intel product launches such as Skylake and Kaby Lake CPUs, Optane storage and Omni-Path networking fabric. Then again the cancellation is not that surprising, seeing how all big vendors have moved way from major events (such as CES or Macworld) to smaller announcements held throughout the year.

Windstream bolsters its SMB Unified Communications (UC) offering with the acquisition of Broadview Networks in an all cash deal worth $227.5 million.

Broadview offers a broad portfolio of cloud-based UC solutions aimed at SMBs under the OfficeSuite UC brand. It also continues to align with popular office applications such as OfficeSuite UC for Microsoft Dynamics 365.

"Broadview’s unique, proprietary unified communications solutions will advance our product portfolio, improving our competitiveness and ability to provide enhanced services to business customers," Windstream CEO Tony Thomas says. "The transaction also will enable us to leverage Broadview’s experienced salesforce and cloud operations across our national footprint."

Software AG acquires Cumulocity, the internet of things (IoT) specialist based in Dusseldorf, Germany. The terms of the deal are not available.

Cumolocity offers connectivity for networked devices and sensors through a cloud-based device management and application enablement platform. It has been in a partnership with Software AG since 2015, and the acquisition is described as the "next local step" in the relationship between the two companies.

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun Daily a number of big names are in a bidding war for the Toshiba NAND memory unit, including the likes of Apple, Google and Amazon.

In total, the Japanese newspaper says, 10 companies are looking to buy the Toshiba semiconductor operation. Among them are US private equity firm Silver Lake, Broadcom (who reportedly offered Toshiba around $18 billion for the unit), Western Digital, SK Hynix, Foxconn and TSMC.

Toshiba accounts for 20% of the NAND market, but apparently plans to sell the lucrative unit to make up for the loss of US nuclear unit Westinghouse Electric, which recently filed for bankruptcy protection.

Cisco completes the $3.7 billion acquisition of application intelligence software developer AppDynamics-- one of the biggest deals in the networking vendor's history, announced back in January 2017.

"We acquired AppDynamics because they are a market leader in a category that will be a cornerstone for how enterprises drive their business forward," cisco says. "Together, AppDynamics and Cisco will be the only company that can deliver complete visibility spanning from the infrastructure to application to end user."

Cisco bought the 9-year old AppDynamics days before it was to go IPO. It was the 17th Cisco acquisition under the leadership of Chuck Robbins, who took over the company as CEO in 2015.

Extreme Networks gets more networking with the acquisition of the networking technology business of Avaya-- a company currently in Chapter 11 bankruptcy-- for $100 million.

"The addition of Avaya's networking business is consistent with our growth strategy and will broaden Extreme's enterprise solutions capabilities by complementing our product portfolio across our vertical markets," Extreme CEO Ed Meyercord says. "Furthermore, we expect the Avaya business to generate over $200m in annual revenue, increase our market share and offer new opportunities for our customers."

Avaya filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection back in January 2017 in order to facilitate a required restructuring of its balance sheet. The company describes the sale of the networking business as a "clear and positive path" for its networking customers and partners, since it should allow for a focus on unified communications and contact centre solutions.
