ENISA Takes on Cloud Security

What happens if a cloud service on which the organisation of the future depend fails or gets hacked? This is the Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP) perspective ENISA takes in its latest report. 

"From a security perspective, the concentration of data is a ‘double-edged sword’" Dr Marnix Dekker says. "Large providers can offer state-of-the-art security and business continuity, spreading the costs across many customers. But if an outage or security breach occurs, the impact is bigger, affecting many organisations and citizens at once."

SMBs Soar Towards the Cloud

According cloud service provider Parallels SMBs are the fastest growing cloud segment-- with the global SMB cloud market set to reach $95 billion by 2015 with a 28% CAGR. 

The global 2012 cloud services market totals $45bn, with at least 6 million first-time SMB cloud customers. 

The Parallels SMB Cloud Insights report says 22% of US SMBs manage websites through the cloud, and 30% plan to adopt cloud-based management tools by 2015. 

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) sellers should find a strong upsell opportunity in storage, since 50% of SMBs are willing to pay more for increased storage. 

Meanwhile cloud-based business applications for SMBs should grow from $9bn in 2011 to $20bn by 2014.  Read more...

Samsung Invests in Database-as-a-Service

The Samsung Venture Investment Corporation (aka Samsung Ventures) makes a "strategic investment" in database-as-a-service (DBaaS) provider Cloudant. 

Samsung does not reveal the actual amount of the investment, but says Cloudant technology is “especially critical for large enterprise businesses… [in managing] the proliferation of data to be created by, mobile devices, machine-to-machine technologies, and the ‘Internet of things’ in the future.”

HP Cloud Chief Departs

The HP flight towards a more cloud-based future hits turbulence, as AllThingsD reveals senior VP and general manager for Cloud Zorowar "Biri" Singh is leaving the company. 

HP confirms the departure with a statement stating "“HP remains committed to our Converged Cloud portfolio. In particular, HP Cloud Services is critical to HP’s efforts to deliver superior public cloud infrastructure, services and solutions to our customers." 

Group VP for technology and customer relations Roger Levy replaces Singh on an interim basis.

Security Makes SMBs Cloud-Reluctant

According to AVG research the majority of SMBs are still uncertain about the cloud-- meaning the miss out on the flexibility and efficiency of cloud-based services. 

The survey covers over 1000 SMBs based in the UK and US. It reveals 31% of UK SMBs do not understand cloud services despite having heard about them, while 22% think cloud services are only for large companies.
