Gartner: Nearly 50% of PaaS Offerings are Cloud-Only

According to Gartner, 48% of over 550 platform-as-a-service (PaaS) currently available from 360 vendors across 21 market segments are cloud-only, with not a single vendor having a foothold across all 21 segments and 90% only operating within a single PaaS market segment.

“Business and technology leaders are shifting to strategic investment in cloud computing,” the analyst says. “Cloud computing is one of the key disruptive forces in IT markets that is gaining mainstream trust. Although many organisations anticipate a long-term retention of on-premises computing, the vendors of nearly half of the cloud platform offerings bet on the prevailing growth of cloud deployments and chose the more modern and more efficient cloud-only delivery of their capabilities.”

Google Cloud Reaches On Premises

Google looks to hybrid cloud deployments as the beta version of the Cloud Services Platform (CSP) allows organisations to run Google cloud workloads on own hardware infrastructure, with a single unified approach to managing applications on multiple environments.

CSP is a Kubernetes-based platform bringing the Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) on-premises for organisations running container workloads. Built on open APIs, CSP promises a more compliant approach to the hybrid competition, allowing customers to modernise applications at their own pace. It includes GKE On-Prem, a managed Kubernetes services providing remote lifecycle management to on-premises clusters, keeping them updated and secure.

Arm Pushes Neoverse to the Cloud, Edge

Arm follows on the October 2018 announcement of the Neoverse "cloud to edge infrastructure foundation" with a pair of platforms based on the technology-- the 7nm-based N1 and the high-efficiency throughput E1.

The N1 is a platform designed for infrastructure-class solutions demanding raw compute speeds. Optimised for 7nm process technology, it promises a 2.5x performance boost on "key cloud workloads," as well as 60% key integer performance improvement. The platform is built with infrastructure-class features, including server-class virtualisation, RAS support, power and performance management and system level profiling.

StackPath Puts Containers and VM on the Edge

Edge computing pioneer StackPath announces StackPath Edge Computing Containers and Virtual Machines (VMs)-- a means for customers to deploy and manage workloads on any StackPath edge node worldwide.

The platform, the company says, allows customers to put applications and services closer to end users, since it leverages more geographically-diverse points of presence (PoPs) compared to centralised public clouds. Such higher proximity makes StackPath Edge Computing ideal for workloads demanding near-immediate response times, such as security technology, media delivery, IoT, ad tech and finance.
