In what is surely a bid to fill depleted pockets RIM sells off cloud services provider NewBay to mobile software Synchronoss Technologies for $55.5 million in cash.

Suggestions NewBay would be up for sale first emerged on August 2012.

“By adding NewBay's technology assets and millions of subscribers, this transaction further establishes Synchronoss as the clear leader in providing cloud based mobile content services for mobile operators around the world," Synchronoss CEO Stephen G. Waldis comments.

TRENDnet announces two new cloud cameras: the Wireless Cloud Camera, model TV-IP751WC and the Wireless Day / Night Cloud Camera*, model TV-IP751WIC.

To view traditional camera video remotely, users need to perform many complicated and time consuming steps: such as signing up for a third party dynamic IP service and reconfiguring their router. The TRENDnet Cloud service removes these complicated steps.

TRENDnet cloud cameras install on a network in less than 5 minutes with a guided CD installation. Users then simply open a web browser and log onto the free secure TRENDnet Cloud service with their unique password to view and manage a TRENDnet cloud camera from any internet connection. Free Apple and Android apps bring live video to smart phones and tablets. Each camera also comes with industry leading camera management software, to setup scheduled and motion detection recording for multiple cameras.

TV-IP751WC Wireless Cloud Camera offers 640 x 480 (VGA) video at up to 20 frames per second (fps), one-way audio, motion detection recording, scheduled recordings, email alerts, date and time overlay, and four times digital zoom. A wall / ceiling mounting kit is included and the camera's off white housing blends into most environments. Read more...

No Free Google Apps for Small Businesses

Google starts charging small businesses (as in with 10 employees or less) using Google Apps-- even if companies already making free use of the cloud applications can continue doing so.

Originally Google offered a free version of Google apps together with the "premium" subscription-based Google Apps for Business. Now it only offers the premium version.

The subscription ($50 annually per user) includes phone support, 25GB of data storage and a 99.99% uptime guarantee.

Individuals, schools and universities can still use Google Apps for free.

Cloudy Channel Financials

Microsoft recently to stated, “We estimate that this year, 60% of the market will still be traditional servers, while 30% will be virtualised and 10% will be in private Clouds .By 2015, however, we expect to see just 10% as traditional servers, 20% virtualised, 40% will be in private Clouds and 30% will be in the public Cloud.”

With such change expected and happening, it is key that channels engage and plan around how to adapt to selling cloud solutions with special focus on the financial aspects.

If previously you dealt predominantly in software, the business model was relatively simple. Customers bought licenses from you and paid you for them accordingly and you hence paid your sales people a % cut upon receipt of those orders or payments. Renewals were treated pretty much the same with a salesperson or renewals individual owning these and the commissions. Read more...
