Lenovo, PayPal Declare War on the Password

Lenovo, PayPal and 4 other companies team up and formally launch the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance, an organisation with plans to bring a standards-based approach to online security and authentication.

The Alliance was first founded back in July 2012, but now provides more details on its standard, as well as opens itself for participation from interested companies and organisations.

Once launched the FIDO standard will support a full bevy of security technologies-- biometrics (fingerprint scanners, voice and facial recognition), Trusted Platform Modules (TPM), USB security tokens, Near Field Communication (NFC) and One Time Passwords (OTP), together with other existing and future technologies. US Homeland Security: Disable UPnP!

Following a whitepaper from security specialists Rapid 7 the US Department of Homeland Security issues a networking security warning-- hackers might exploit flaws in the Universal Plug and Play (UPnp) protocol.

According to Rapid7 common UPnP discovery protocol (SSDP) implementations, such as the UPnP control interface (SOAP) and the libupnp open source portable UPnP device SDK, have a number of bugs allowing the ill-intentioned to crash services and execute arbitrary code.

In an IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine paper Google security VP Eric Grosse and engineer Mayank Upadhyay outlines plans different means for logging into the websites of the near future, such as SIM cards, authentication keys and NFC-enabled finger rings.

“Along with many in the industry, we feel passwords and simple bearer tokens such as cookies are no longer sufficient to keep us Read more...

Bad Grammar Make Good Password?

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University suggest another element to keep in mind when coming up with supposedly strong passwords-- good grammar is a security no-no.

The researchers developed an algorithm able to make short work of cracking long passwords (even with numbers and symbols) if they make grammatical sense as a whole phrase.

According to New Scientist the algorithm creates grammatically correct sentences out of words and phrases sourced from password-cracking databases. Other cracking programs are limited to making multiple guesses out Read more...
